Just been outside to double check, my 2006 Elegance hasn’t got a locking main glove compartment

I believe Sepulchrave is referring to the little cubby with the "on" pull tab that locks. I might not have it either if VAG removed it when they facelifted the Fabia.

Pretty sure he means the big main glovebox. I don't think any of them had lockable small cubby boxes.

In which case, I've definitely not got that as mine can be opened by looking at it funny regardless of whether the key is in or not.

If you find that the lid opens too easily, there are two metal spring clips at the top that are just pushed on. They can fall off as once happened to one of mine which makes the lid far too easy to open. Make sure you have two of them present. I took a pic of the clips...

Crime prevention advice is not to lock it . I've even heard of some crime prevention folks saying it's even better to remove content of glove box and leave it open overnight. But along with the secret knobs etc, a lot of T leafs don't know about the "hidden" tray inside the glove compartment. Difficult to spot if you don't know it's there but handy for storing documents erc.

But how would the thieves know it was locked unless they'd already broken into the car?

I don't understand where this 'advice' is coming from unless it's from the fecund imagination of a complete fantasist.

The 'secret' document compartment is for the folder containing all the manufacturers manuals and other books which is what's hidden in mine.

As posted above .

Idea being that it's obvious( by  being open ) that glove compartment contains nothing of value and is not locked.

The 1990's called to remind you that thieves used to steal car stereos and alloy wheels.

Nowadays notsomuch.

I'm protected against both of those through the wonders of "modern" technology... and a spare stereo :D

Meanwhile back in 2021 , crime prevention advice remains the same. Anything inviting left on display is a target. Car systems are protected. Alloy wheels are locked) , but ANYTHING of value inside a car can /will be stolen for a fix. I've seen it in past.

Fabia alloys- last person stealing them was sent to looney bin. Stereo in back street. Would you want to tangle with a 8kg JRT cross who is frightened of strangers.

Aye, especially the scabby looking things that live on my Furby. :D

Nope, and I wouldn't like to try and deal with my springer spaniel either. Feisty wee bandit when it suits him lol.

May I remind you that you said something completely illogical about a locked glove box.

If somebody tells you something stupid you don't HAVE to repeat it to us.

My 05 53 plate Elegance didn't have a lockable glove box either. But then mine didn't have electric rear windows. Maybe stopped in late 2002?

Cost-cutting measure by VAG perhaps?

More than likely. Like switching from bolts to rivets on the door panels.

We don't talk about that.

Maybe it was a cost option, I don't know or even care, I've never used it.

Not sure if another cost saving measure but I miss the cable operated tailgate release that my 2001 estate had (beside fuel door release)

Must have been. I've not got that one either but the older Comfort and Elegances had it.
