Lynn67 you will find the Autel MaxiScan MS309 a handy tool especially perhaps the ability to view Freeze Frame Data with some error codes as this will give you a wider picture of possibly causes for the error code.  At the price it is obviously a basic tool but even with the expensive scanners do bear in mind the error codes locations are often just the messenger of the problem and not the actual cause of the problem so immediately replacing a part that has the error code without further investigation and conformation may still leave you with the problem and perhaps an unnecessary part replacement.

Prevention is always better than cure but as these cars can sometimes throw up spurious and unnecessary error codes, say when the car battery is in too lower state of charge to keep thee computers happy, then it is handy to be able to delete those codes, or after repair, so the computers get the car back to normal running quicker.

Sounds like Keith might be a guy to sort the exhaust problem, good luck.

Actually, surprisingly perhaps, it doesn't matter if it's on, so don't worry too much. Just screenshot this and point it out to the tester if they try to fail your car for EML on. Your car is too

Just as a wee recommendation then, I've got the Aldi branded one of these and I imagine that's just the same thing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363357118683?hash=item5499c5a0db:g:5oMAAOSwP6FgdHuc

Thanks nta16, yes it's a case of giving you an idea of what and where to look for a problem.

At least I can clear the codes after the problem is sorted as you say.

Yeah I must say they are a good bunch of blokes who work there.

I think you need a different garage.

Deleting fault codes has no effect on how the car runs.

Different to what I've seen but I'm not splitting hairs if I've not given strictly correct terminology, or comprehensive explanation, at the moment I'm not in the mood, Glen Miller will have to wait and I've been here before and fed up with the full half hours or £8 course of ten that run here. -

That depends on how much you have imbibed.

i just went into one locally just to see  what part of the exhaust was blowing and just curious on what they would quote me, being Holt in north norfolk,i wasn't expecting it to be cheap. But i couldn't believe it when he said i needed 4 new tyres, so i replied my car has passed all it's MOT'S with the tyres on due to the tread being legal and they haven't perished.

I'm stone cold sober, I only social drink once or twice a week for a few hours, and it's not today, I don't do drugs either, just high on life at the moment, it won't last too long I'm sure.  The vultures might circle overhead but they won't come down for a living body, even if they keep an evil eye on it. 😁

i haven't been out for a drink since summertime last year. i did have about two and a half bottles of wine over the xmas/ new year, but haven't one since. i have a very low alcohol tolerance these days, two pints of lager is about my limit nowadays.😄

Yes but it is four halves.  😄

Cheaper and better for your health and life to stick with a low tolerance, and you'll have a clear head for sorting your car.

Except it wipes the dynamic map...

That's exactly what I mean; if they're trying to condemn tyres based on age and not wear or condition, what other stories are they making up?

I know how many people have fallen for that and got new tyres when they didn't need them just to get money out of them. There are a lot of elderly people who have retired here is this area who probably have. I certainly won't be going back there again. I will stick to going to Fakenham area where I have always gone.

So this is the error code the scanner showed. Is this to do with when  my flexi blowing, which has now been sorted.

Might do, might not, might be other stuff too, in addition, or might be single cause - that's the thing with cheap error code readers they don't always tell you much.  What is on page 2 of 2?

Have you tried clearing the code to see if it returns?

As it shows P0171 is a generic code. - https://vwtuning.co/vw-audi-p0171-engine-code/

I used to get that, cleared it but it would come back again weeks/ months later.

The car ran just as well with the error as without it so it didn't bother me. I had a coil pack go down and a new one fitted and I've not had an error since.

I've got the same warning now and again, and like @totoro I just wipe the code should it come up. Doesn't seem to be affecting mine much anymore.

Those error code readers are like me they contain (and retain) too little information to be of much help often but they sometimes can point to issues so perhaps not always to be ignored unless it's a thing that leads nowhere each time or you can get further information elsewhere.

It's like having extra gauges and readings for the car, sometimes they just give you more to worry about, this is where experience (time driving the vehicle over a range of uses, environments and situations) helps you decide how much and when to worry about the information.

More likely a vacuum leak, have you checked all the hoses, if so just clear it and see if it comes back.

It's top of the list on that hyperlink.

The car is running perfectly fine and the engine management light only came on after the flexi before the cat started blowing.

I didn't see the car with the blowing flexi, but that could have sucked in air between the lambda probes, giving the appearance of lean running as per the fault code.

I have cleared the fault for now and wait to see if it comes back on. I have the MOT tomorrow morning so need to clear it for that.
