  • Car exhaust was done this morning, cost me £48 as opposed to £220 - £240 so saved me alot of money 🙂

Actually, surprisingly perhaps, it doesn't matter if it's on, so don't worry too much. Just screenshot this and point it out to the tester if they try to fail your car for EML on. Your car is too

Just as a wee recommendation then, I've got the Aldi branded one of these and I imagine that's just the same thing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363357118683?hash=item5499c5a0db:g:5oMAAOSwP6FgdHuc

Might do, might not, might be other stuff too, in addition, or might be single cause - that's the thing with cheap error code readers they don't always tell you much.  What is on page 2 of 2?

Have you tried clearing the code to see if it returns?

As it shows P0171 is a generic code. - https://vwtuning.co/vw-audi-p0171-engine-code/

The same was on page 2.

No I have cleared today and took it for a run and it hasn't come back on so far.

Sorry I missed your post, I think my internet/computer/me is/are having problems at the moment.

(ETA: Wrong -) As long as the Engine wotsit light isn't on for the MoT, they won't be looking for error codes (unless they're looking for work?).

If the code returns take your car to Keith and get him to look it over and plug in a proper diagnostic scan tool.

I was typing a post about not ignoring these error codes and car gauges and readings but if you've had the car a good while driving in all sorts of conditions to also trust your experience of the car as there can sometimes be codes and there nothing wrong car enough to worry about at least, or flipside you may feel there is something wrong with the car and there is despite error codes not showing.

No, it's me that the problems are with - I thought you were referring to the hyperlink reference, I've just looked on page two of this thread.  🤣  🤣

I put the hyperlink to the info so that you can learn for yourself - and then you might be able to teach me!  🙃

Don't think answers and solutions are always straightforward or that any button on the car or these magic electronic tools will instantly solve things, that's were the likes of Keith's training and experience (possibly in life too) and some on here comes in very useful but even they can be caught out by the very unlikely that can happen or be the cause.

Good luck with the MoT.

Do bear in mind the MoT is only one trained person's opinion and testing of the car at one point of time only, to say that it meets the minimum requirements of the statutory test at that point, it doesn't fully relate to how good the car is or how well it is running.

The car passed it's mot with some advisories.

I have had the exhaust on the last three, it's only the outer skin on the silencer.

He said the oil leak is most likely where the oil pressure sensor is the seal probably just needs replacing.

The bushes will need doing before next mot.

They're ringing me back later with a price for the bushes and oil leak to be done.

Good stuff.

The fact that there were no hiccups with the emissions test suggests that the flexi was what was leading to the fault code/light, I should think.

If those console bushes have not been done previously, they've lasted remarkably long, 20 years!

The oil pressure switches can fail internally and start leaking. The only cure is a new one but they are not expensive

I've had the car for 8 years and not had them done.

She's doing pretty well for an old gal😆.

He couldn't see exactly where the leak was coming from, but he said it was definitely at the front, he said if the seal has gone there is a thin wire that goes into the sensor and the oil tends to run down that wire and drip off it.

The oil pressure switch is sealed by a soft metal washer. I can't see how that could fail unless the switch is loose. If it's coming from the switch it's more likely to be the switch itself. In case you need a new one, the part number is 036 919 081 D

I had the same 'oil leak' advisory.

As they don't remove the under tray thing they can't see where the oil is coming from.

In my case it was probably from an unexpected 'gloop' when I was adding oil that had run down the engine.

I did nothing and there was no oil leak the next year.

Great advice.

Genuine Skoda switch only around £15 I believe.

@Lynn67 I'd budget for the bushes, but unless you have asymmetrical tyre wear, leave them until they fail. I've known other similar faults "go away" between one MoT and the next.

I hax this exact oil leak and discovered the oil was actually passing through the sensor itself I bet if you take the connector off you will find oil in the connectors.
