  • Car exhaust was done this morning, cost me £48 as opposed to £220 - £240 so saved me alot of money 🙂

Actually, surprisingly perhaps, it doesn't matter if it's on, so don't worry too much. Just screenshot this and point it out to the tester if they try to fail your car for EML on. Your car is too

Just as a wee recommendation then, I've got the Aldi branded one of these and I imagine that's just the same thing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363357118683?hash=item5499c5a0db:g:5oMAAOSwP6FgdHuc

Have you tried plugging in an OBD scanner to check for faults? That'll help narrow things down a wee bit. :)

No I haven't had a chance to get to a garage yet to see what it's coming up as.

They plug in behind the wee cubby thing besides the steering wheel, you pull it to open it, then pull it once more and you'll see a wee purple plug. Let it run it's diagnostic thingy and it'll come back with codes pointing you towards whatever problem it is, hopefully. My wee one was great for decrypting various Fabia problems. :D

This is it on an LHD car, so RHD is just mirrored.

Hope this helps. :)

You could also check that your car battery isn't low, even if the car starts and the lights seem bright enough, now is a very good time to check anyway as the days get shorter and colder and your electric use with increase and battery charging possibly decrease.

Take any error codes generally as pointers only and there can be many faults that won't give an error code or soon enough but at £15 if it gives any codes it's better than not knowing.

Thanks for the link I will order one. I have looked before but not been sure which ones would work.

I have this one which also works well...

I had the exhaust checked December last year as I'd had advisories  the previous 2 years on the silencer for the MOT. Silencer is fine just the outer casing rusty but he told me the manifold would probably need doing in 4 -6 months time as it was starting to get a hole in it, which I think it has now by the sounds of the car.

That may be related to the fault light then, but wait and see what fault codes show. Unusual place to get a hole/leak, I think. :wondering:

Flexi section in the front pipe would be much more common.

the exhaust

That's most unusual. Having the exhaust system start blowing is much more likely.

I have to admit as far as I can remember I don't think I have had any part of the exhaust replaced since I had the car which will be 8 or 9 years on the 29th of this month.

That's what I was wondering if the light coming on was anything to do with that. I was quoted £160 for the manifold to be done.

Since petrol went to very low-sulphur formulations to make catalytic converters survive, exhausts don't rot from the inside out like they used to.

That's interesting. I have noticed since owning cat-equipped cars that the exhausts seem to last far longer than on cars with no cat. They used to rot out in no time.

Yeah didn't they just especially if you done a lot of short journeys, as I was told was the reason why mine used to rot through.

As the guys said buy a cheap generic code reader but based on ehat you said and if you can hear it blowing sounds like your issue is fuel consumption increased or lack of power or acceleration ???

I have just had my exhaust system checked again and apparently it is the flexi pipe to the cat that has is blowing, apparently you have to replace the cat with the flexi as it is all one piece. First quoted me over £300 then got it down to £260.

I have just got my OBDH code reader as well.

This (or equivalent from another factor) is probably what they will fit, and they will likely get it for a little less than this:

React Catalytic Converter (Front) | Euro Car Parts

Might be an idea to get another quote for fitting only if you supply?

I wouldn't usually recommend that approach, but the labour/sundries that gets you from £108 to £260 seems a little OTT.

They'll also get a few tens of pounds by recycling your old cat.

I have just rung up where I usually go for my exhaust and tyres and Keith said the cheapest would be about £220 - £240, so he has suggested welding a new flexi on, so I am dropping it off Monday morning with them to see what they can do.

The best bit was after telling me about my exhaust, the bloke then told me I need 4 new tyres as the ones on the car are over 5 years old.

I don't think so.

I had same issue mate brought snd fitted it myself its not s big job just a bit fiddly getting 2 of the nuts off.
