Superb 280 mpg realistic

Featured Replies

 Evening folks…

Looking at moving on from my current mapped diesel 4x4 sportline to a 2018 280 in dragon green.. could some of you guys that have them give me an idea on fuel economy please. Mapped and un mapped if poss.

I am seeing about 240 miles to £50 @ £1.45 per litre mix of b roads and a roads and dual carriageways. Onboard comp average is 32 mpg with average speed around 32 mph, during my 200 miles per week commute and 40 miles at the weekend. Was running a Passat B8 Estate 2.0 TDI 150 before so a bit of shock to the system in fuel costs but the Superb puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it!

Mines a 272 but the figures should be more or less the same.

Over 2 years, mine has done 32mpg on average over 18000 miles. That’s a mixture of all road types.

On a run, close to 40 is possible and in town, it’ll be mid 20s.

Mine isn’t remapped. Yet.

It's SO dependant on drivibg pattern when in town

I've been on a slow but moving in  route recently 8 miles so it gets warm , getting around 27mpg, add some stop start traffic jams (with stop start turned off and it's 24 ish) did 31mpg coming home today but 9pm gentle flow the whole way.  Previous car struggled to crack 22mpg ( mondeo 2.5T)  so I'm still well chuffed and feel like I'm winning.

Hitting the brakes kills the consumption, if you can drive on 'accelerator sense' it's much better.

Surely if you drive the 280 it should be SPG (smiles per gallon) measured?

Around town, 10-11 lites/100kms

On highway, 7 lites/100kms

22 / 23 Mpg 3 Mile work commute over 40 Mpg holiday runs.

What revs do you see on a 280 at 70mph with DSG 6 speed? Is it noticeably lower on the 272 with the 7 speed?

I'm glad my days of driving for smiles is over 😉

These fuel economies would make me cry.

If wanting to map one then i would expect that un-mapped you will still want to run it on 97 or 99 ron E5 Super Unleaded rather than 95 ron E10 Unleaded.

Best price the running cost using the more expensive fuel,  maybe the only slightly more expensive Tesco or Sainsburry super unleaded or more again Shell, BP, Texaco etc.

On our 2016 280, circa 26-27 urban and about 38 average on an 800 mile round trip to Ireland earlier this year. These are real MPG’s calculated on brim to brim refills.

Coming from a healthy mapped 4x4 diesel I wonder if  the 280/272 standard torque will be a bit disappointing. Not sure what the diesel’s economy is but my 7 speed 272 on Tesco 99 RON is generally 31-32 Mpg up to 43 on runs either on a motorway run with the flow or 60 mph on A roads,  according to the readout,  even with some sporadic bits of enjoyable moments thrown in. I’m not keen enough to do brim to brim.

Having had a remapped MKII 170 giving 220bhp which could give 55mpg, I can assure anyone making the switch they will not be disappointed with a bog-standard 280…

low 20's around town, maybe a bit more if it gets time to warm up. Mid 30's on any kind of run, maybe 40 if I am gentle. Towing a  6'9" to the roofline 5' wide flat front box trailer knocks 6-9mpg off dependant on speed.

Remember Skoda like you to use Super Unleaded in a 280 so factor that in to your pounds/mile calcs. With prices like they are, and a 66 litre tank, I managed my first ever £100 fill up the other day.

But if you are buying a 280 for economy, you probably shouldn't.

My mapped diesel runs on optimax purely because I’m a fuel snob and I’ve never had any problems with every car I’ve run on it !! So yes £102 fill up the other day so that’s no bother.. seems the petrol is about 5 p cheaper Than the diesel too… I only get around 43 on a run with the diesel and loaded with box probs 37 ish so it sounds like it’ll not be a huge difference

That I am worried about initially.. my diesel is 235bhp and 540nm so I think that’d be a factor. However a mapped 280 would give those kinds of torque figures anyway and 370bhp

That’s about what I get anyway from diesel on continent trips and Ireland runs. Generally with roof box, luggage, wife and 2 kids

We’ll I’m most defo a fuel snob anyway so I’d certainly not put it anywhere near anything less than 97 !! And the one I’m looking at has only done 29k miles so it’s still recoverable if previous owner has run it on standard haha

@Esseesse200, Recoverable?

Do you mean if a car is ran on regular 95 ron than some damage might of occurred which will miraculously rectify if a higher octane fuel with a different additive package is used?

All the difference is that you might get a bit more performance than the previous drivers did if they used 95 ron.

I doubt the engine is coked up.

About 2400rpm. I suspect the 7 speed will be 400rpm or so less than that if the missus's Karoq is anything to go by (realise they aren't that transferable, but its all I have to go on).

Roof racks are economy killers - mine with 4 bikes on it to stir up the air is nearly as bad for economy as towing the box trailer. I got fed up with (over)loading the car for holidays with roof rack, towbar bike rack and bags rammed everywhere. When we got a springer spaniel that was the final push needed to get the trailer for all the other crap so he could travel in the boot. Now we have a pretty much empty, comfortable car and all the crap is in the mobile shed behind. When we get to the holiday let I just unhitch it and job done.

FWIW I have never thought I needed more torque with the 280, and that's with doing a fair bit of towing where would notice a lack of torque. My dad had a Volvo 5 pot diesel that were known for torque - I drove that a fair bit and the 280 would kick its arse.

Haha yea I was only joking.. normal fuel is fine really but just not for me and I’m sure the vehicle would be fine with it as they are designed that way 👍🏻

@Esseesse200 Which filling stations sell Optimax Diesel?

Shell, BP, Esso.

I Thought you were a Fuel Snob that was making up your mix.

So Premium Diesels,  Shell, V-Power,  BP Ultimate, ESSO Synergy Supreme +.
