Estate. Rear washer issue

Featured Replies

Where are the rear washer bottle and motor located please.

Thanks in advance for any helpful comments.

Only 1 bottle and motor in engine compartment.

As above...   behind the wheelarch liner.  The motor is bidirectinal with a flow valve and two outlets.  It spins one way for the front washers and the other way for the rear.

It may help if you tell us what the issue actually is.

Many thanks, MicMacskomaz & KenONeill for your quick and very helpful replies.

| have just bought the vehicle and am getting to know it.  When I first drove it the rear wiper was in the 12 o'clock position and then something caused it to move to its normal resting place. However moving the washer stem forward does not cause the wiper to operate, neither is there the sound (if it is moved forward again (for the washer) of the washer motor.  One thought was that it might be the relay, apparently number 377,  situated behind a drop down panel  in the driver's footwell.  However, since neither the rear washer or wiper is working does that suggest an error at the switch.  The previous owner, whose comments I trust, says that this has all been working fine so, if it is just the switch would a liberal application of a suitable spray electronic cleaner (even WD40) be a first step?

I notice that all of you are either in Scotland or the Shetland Isles which lends weight to my long held belief that these vehicles are generally fairly bullet proof.

Could be but use a real contact cleaner, not Water Dispersant 40! It could also be a fuse, but I don't know which of the many it would be. Just to confirm, the front screen washer is ok?

Thanks, Ken

Have found the fuse (PC41), checked that and it's OK. Good point to use a contact cleaner rather than a water/moisture dispersant. Thank you.

Nigel

Are the relays reliable or, are they known to fail please?

The washer bottle and wiper not working. Must be switch?

Rear wiper motor does fail. Ours was unreliable after 6 or 7 years. Replaced with a magnetti morelli item.

FYI the front and rear wash/wipe won't operate if the bonnet/tailgate are open, perhaps the tailgate lock switch is faulty.

Many thanks, TheClient & MicMac for your helpful comments.

Yes, I rather feel this is pointing towards the switch but, since the front wiper and washers are working then it seems unlikely to be the tailgate lock switch.  I see that one can buy the switch for under £30 but removing the steering wheel to get to removing the cowling seems to be something of a pig's ear.

The front and rear with respect to their relevant locks.

Sorry, MicMac, didn't understand.

Opening the bonnet disables the front wash-wipe, but leaves the rear operational, and vice versa.

Many thanks,  Ken. Understand now.

This morning it wasn't raining as such but, the air was moist. Was in the car fiddling about and lo and behold (apart from the fact that it is Christmas) the rear wiper operated so, can only assume its operation is related to the rain sensor.  At least one knows that the motor is OK. Don't know about the rear washer yet.  Thanks everyone for your helpful comments and suggestions and have a great Christmas.

Sorry to disappoint but the rear wiper and washer can be switched on and off at any time, whether raining or not and not related to the rain sensor.

I had an intermittent rear wiper caused by the brushes in the motor sticking in their holders. As the brushes wear down, the end of the brush spring gets  "unwound" and exerts less pressure. Fine in normal circumstances but not if the brush is also sticking in the holder.

The exception is if the front wipers are set to auto, rain is detected and you select reverse gear, in which case the rear wiper is activated.

Thanks very much, MicMac, that is very interesting and helpful.   So there would appear to be an intermittent error.

Sorry, thanks also, pikkpilot, for your helpful input.

Hi MicMac,

I didn't mention this as my car did not come with this feature and assumed others without a multi functional display didn't either.

Later, I activated this feature with the Carista App.

it could be a break in the wiring at the hinge thats intermittant, you would have to remove the interior trim around the boot hatch (my scout has metal pull/press clips) so you can get to the motor to see if theres current there, you might have to do it from inside with the boot shut if opening the tailgate switches off the wiper,it could be fused seperatly. cheers Stuart

Many thanks everyone for your really helpful suggestions.  Problem solved. It turned out that whilst the the tailgate is locked down it just needs an extra push to get a 'click' and then the sensor is happy and all works well. I am new to this vehicle and presumed that as the tailgate was secure it was fully engaged.  Hope no one feels they have wasted their efforts being so helpful.

Thanks again.
