Is this a feature or some fault?

Featured Replies

Had my Octy a few months now but noticed a couple of weird things and wanted to check if it's something to be worried about or not.

The first is every so often either one, or both of the fog lights come on when my main headlights are on. It also switches from left to right. Sometimes neither. So I can't pin it down to anything or happening at a specific time.

The second and most worrying, sometimes the car maintains speed when I've taken my foot off the accelerator. It's almost like cruise control except I don't have that. It happens in various gears and speeds, so again no idea if there is a specific trigger. I've made sure the pedal isn't stuck by lifting it up but no change. It stops if I press the pedal down, or if I brake.

Anyone advice would be great. Thanks

Could this be related to turning tight corners, probably with the relevant indicator active?

Cornering lights.

Hi Beki, are you in ECO mode, when you say the car maintains speed ?

Definetely sounds like ECO mode, and the fog lights turning on and off, are the cornering lights function.

Sounds like the cornering fogs to me too, on mine if the headlights are on and I put it in reverse both fogs come on. If you are driving below 40mph ( i think 40 is the threshold, it might be 30) and the headlights are on and you steer left then the left fog light goes on, steer right and the right fog light goes on, drive straight and none are on. I find this really useful as I have a dark gateway to drive in each night and the fog light coming on provides extra illumination for me.

Try out the above scenarios as maybe someone coded them to perform differently. I can't remember if mine come on when i'm stopped and I indicate as i'm usually the one driving and not looking at the front of my car :)

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like you guys have figured the lights out thanks! I couldn't understand why it was happening.

As far as I know I'm not in eco mode. When I checked it was normal.

How long is it maintaining speed for?

If it's only briefly, you might just be experiencing 'rev hang' where the ECU continues to inject fuel for emissions reasons even after you've lifted off.

@langers2k last has given me an idea. Does your car possess a throttle damper? One of mine did, and it held the throttle open when I lifted off.

Well I managed to get a video that was 15 seconds so at least that long. I think probably longer but I normally brake to stop it.

I'll be honest I don't actually know. I only know a bit when it comes to cars. Any way to find out?

Weird - nothing should be holding the throttle open for that long.

Feels like something is failing but I'm not entirely sure what or how. Personally, I'd log various parameters during a drive to try and narrow it down but I imagine you haven't got any diagnostic equipment?

Nope. Anything with cars I used to ask my dad as he was a mechanic but he passed away a few years ago. I do have a warranty from perry's so I might take it in and see what they think.

My prediction? "They all do that sir" - that's what the majority of dealers say...

I see the car is a 'Greenline' which is not something sold in my country so is the car a diesel or petrol, automatic or manual?

More general question but wouldn't some sort of cruise control be a standard fitting in the UK?

I can not see the cars age, engine or gearbox but does the car have 'Coasting' function?

It's a diesel manual. Not all cars have it fitted. It does come standard with some trim packages but not mine.

It's a manual diesel 1.6 tdi, made September 2016. I haven't seen anything about a coasting function when I've googled and checked the car manual so I'm none the wiser.

@I_am_Beki, If the engine can continue to run on for 15 seconds or so then I can understand your concern. What if touching the brake or throttle doesn't work?

The next time it occurs and road conditions allow you might be brave enough to apply the clutch and see if the engine revs rise or just drop back to tick over.

Does it happen every time you take your foot off the pedal, or is it an intermittent issue?

If intermittent does it coincide with something like a DPF regeneration?

More general question for the forum to answer is whether there is a 'throttle' cable link to injection actuator or is the 'throttle' actuation a virtual one from a remote sensor on the pedal?
