Loss of power / Locking up

Hi

My 2008 Octavia Mk 2 1.9 TDI BXE seems on full lock to intermittently be struggling. There are no warning lights on the dash and the engine seems to be fine, when released from full lock and on the straight there doesn't seem to be any issues.

Has anyone had a CV joint fail without any noises or could someone give me any ideas.

I have recently had the Haldex oil and filter replaced & have been advised the 4wd system seems to be running all ok.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

This may or may not be relevent but when I had a similar problem on our mk1 Octy it turned out to be the steering pump fluid needing replacing.

Its fluid run PAS as there is a reservoir ,but don't hear any release valve so is a possibility.

The battery was replaced about 2 years ago and seems to be ok, could give a full recharge and see if makes any difference

Thanks

If this is permanent 4WD and you've recently had the Haldex serviced I'd be inclined to think it was done incorrectly.

Take it back to the garage and have them scan for any codes relating to the transmission.

You need to be far more explicit in your explanation, as it is at least 50% of the responses will be following a red herring.

What is struggling?

The engine lacking power?

The steering heavy or stiff?

Mechanical noises or snatching when manouevring on full lock?

Tyre scrubbing?

What do you mean by intermittent, are there circumstances when it has the as yet undefined struggle and others when it doesn't?

Hi

The vehicle runs normally under normal driving conditions, however when cold, and turning right on an accute turn there is a what I would call a resistance to roll forward and this  seems to lead to a loss of drive and my wife who has sampled this more kangarooded. It also did it yestereday on a full left lock reversing out of the driveway and when the steering was taken off full lock it was fine.

There is no knocking noises which I would have expected if a CV was on its way out and the vehicle drives fine apart from this. It also is quite intermittent when happens.

The steering seems to operating normally with no drift  or pull. Tyres are all ok and pressures checked.

I think may have got a small amount of scrubbibg noise from the OSF but this may not be anything to do with the probelm.

The Haldex oil & filter were changed as was well over due  by time and seems to have cured a delay from the front to back and was advised that was running correctly on the ramp where I had replaced.

Kind regards

Could be a faulty CV.

Could be a shot differential, or the diff/driveshaft support bearings. Usually you hear a loud clunk when putting on/lifting off the power as the diff moves from side to side.

To confirm, check for end play at the drive shaft gearbox flanges , you need both wheels in the air to check this. Twisting both driveshafts in opposite directions and look for the flanges moving in and out of the box.

If there is evidence of gearbox oil leakage at the flanges, the gearbox maybe running quite dry and those bearings are the first to go.

Remote possibility are the brakes coming on for some reason, maybe check the flexi hoses for signs of deterioration.

Thanks for your advice, as there was some swarf in the haldex when we changed the oil & filter we are going to do another oil change & see what comes out. then review it from there,

It's transmission wind up from where the Haldex coupling is engaged in anticipation of an event that does not happen.

Mine does it sometimes when pulling forward or reversing out of a parking place on full lock, being an ex 4x4 driver I am attuned to the sound and feel of tyres scrub when the front & rear wheels ate following different paths, I only just sense it & the feel a slight jerk as the coupling releases, given the swarf in yours then I would say that the clutch is not releasing promptly when commanded.

The Haldex pre-emptively engages, it knows not that you are about to drive slowly on full lock out of a parking space or are going to dump the clutch with maximum revs to turn right (or left) across a T junction.

Or you are yet another victim of a mechanic for whom any hole is as good as another and that is your diff oil and the diff is now foutu which will give the same lock up & snatching sensation if the planet wheels are breaking up.
