Rubbing nois on Skoda rapid sport

Featured Replies

Hi all I have a rubbing noise coming from the front of my rapid sport it's when I go over bumps or rough road it sound like the wheels are hitting arch liners but when I've checked there is no indication of them catching so has anyone experienced this because I'm stumped

Back in 2014 loads on here had it.

You need to search back through the forums for a cure.

Mine only did it on speed bumps. A loud creak from the front left every time.

Thanks for that I will have a look to see if I can find it

My 65 Plate 1.6tdi did this.

Had a blown front left shock which was paritally to blame but even after replacing, it still made some noises as you describe but again mostly over speed bumps.

Sold the car just before loads needed doing to it (asked the dealer i sold it to how much stuff needed doing and totaled about £1500) so never got to the bottom of what was causing it. If i remember correctly, there was an issue with the gearbox mounts loosening over time and causing noises over rough roads.

Also from what i read over time the rapid just starts making noise, and creak and scapes just start to happen. Maybe just have a look at all you undertray fittings to make sure they're all still there as those also go missing over time.

Mine's started making similar noises but from all four corners, I'm fairly certain (on mine at least) it's dried out ARB bushings and maybe the gearbox mounts for good measure. In a thousand miles or so when the next service is due I'm going to get my mechanic to lubricate or replace the bushings as necessary, inspect the gearbox mounts and generally give the car a once over to make sure it's tip top, hopefully that'll stop the noises!

I had that horrible creak on mine when going over bumps. It was cured when I replaced the anti roll bar bushes. It has started to return again recently after a couple of silent years, so this time I will be changing them for poly bushes.

I forgot to say when replacing the ARB bushes stick some Castrol red rubber grease on them. It helps with making them last a bit longer.

I might've fixed it! (at least temporarily)

shamefully I don't actually own a jack right now but I remembered I had a pair of ramps in the shed so I got the car in the air and sprayed silicon lubricant on every rubber component and bushing I could (especially the ARB bushings). Pretty much instantly the suspension was silent, I do wonder how long the silence will last though.

That’s what I did with mine, bush by bush, until I had found the culprit. It always seems to be my front left (UK nearside) ARB bush that gets creaky. To be completely sure I took the bush out rotated it and put it back in the opposite way round, which made it silent for quite a while until I bought some new ones. I think the problem seems to be the rubber goes hard over time.  Thankfully new bushes and stretch bolts for the ARB are only about £20 or so.

You seem to be a much more practical man than myself haha, I pretty much refuse to go near bushes (bushings? is there a correct one) because anytime I've tried replacing one in the past it's been a nightmare and I don't own a press! I might try AT-205 re-sealer before I replace them although mine is a 2014 car so I'm only prolonging the inevitable. Glad we agree and got this figure out though, it's been bugging me for while.

I am a former motor trade technician so still have all the gear. Although the ARB bushes require no press to remove/refit.  You just need the wheels off the ground so that you can drop the bolts out (the driveshafts can block them otherwise).  You could try some penetrating (WD40) spray to drive out any moisture, before spraying with a silicone based lubricant once dry. Don’t use oil or grease as it will degrade the rubber even more, hence why I use rubber safe Castrol red rubber grease on the bushes.

Former motor trade technician, that makes sense! Armed with this information I may have a go when the time comes (and when I buy a jack lol) - thanks for all the tips and good luck with your Rapid!
