Instrument cluster repair

Featured Replies

Hi guys I posted before about changing the MFD screen on my clocks well I'm actually getting round to start sorting this issue out. It seems to I can get a replacement flat ribbon for the screen via ebay but there's very limited info on the repair if none at all. Only info I can find relates to swapping out the leds on the clocks. I'm keen to give it a go myself but would have preferred to leave it in to someone but they have quoted a rough price of £150 but that's to swap my clocks and code in a second hand set they have refurbished? There's is plenty of companies on the mainland that seem to offer the service but it's the hassle of posting my clocks off and the extra expense of postage. I know the dealer charges around £1k to do that work and that £150 quid is a fraction of the price but if I can get info on repairing it myself it would save me a whole wad of cash. The MFD has pixels missing all over and its the mileage is unreadable and I've been told they'll not pass it for mot if they cant read the mileage. I'm unsure if the ribbon is clipped in or soldered on?

Any help is much appreciated guys.

I have seen Wheeler Dealers or some other TV car prog have the same problem, and they took the instrument panel to experts somewhere in England. Led's were replaced, and they were very skilled at soldering. It's worth sending it away, as the risk of damaging the board is very high if you're not an expert, and it may cost you more money in the end. Internet search should find repairers.

I doubt they would have manufactured two different units with mph or kph so it may display mph when fitted. though stranger things have happened.

The display is just an LCD matrix, its neither miles or kms nor English, French or Chinese, it illuminates the pixels that it is told to by the instrument cluster controller.

LHD/RHD and miles/kms etc are all coding settings for the instrument cluster, changing the LCD display will not change the coding or the information displayed.

Editted, I am having my doubts about the above, I was speaking as if it were a Maxidot display but looking at the ghost image in the photograph I am not so sure now.

Agreed. the pre defined areas that can illuminate are visible.
