Suggestions on Offset for 'heavier' steering feel /scrub radius etc etc

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just taken hold of a 5E/NE-MY2020 (1.4TSI), and new to this forum;  apologies if this question has already been raised (lots of very good content I need to catch up):

Stock - 205/55/16" ET46.

Would like to upsize +2 to 18", and in the process, hopefully also get a better/'heavier feel' to the steering (looking at ODBEleven adaptations - that's another topic?).
Found a very good deal on 18x7.5JJ, ET50 which is almost what is listed as stock for VRS/2.0TSI models.

Would anyone advice against going for these, as ET40/35s are more common (look better too)...

My noob/limited understanding of scrub radius and axle geometry is pulling me in different directions wrt to going for a more aggressive ET or staying with the 'stock' ET50/51.

mytyres are listing 7.5Jx18 ET50 steel rims from the VW ID.3 for £61.90 each.

If you're going for alloys, at least you know where to get a spare with the same specification.

Do you know that steering assistance/weight can be changed electronically using a tool like VCDS?

No don't know whats involved, but plenty of VCDS, OBD eleven experts on here.

VCDS can't change the steering curve on a MQB platform car.

The steering curve(s) are now in a parameter file that needs flashing onto the steering rack. You'd need a tool such as ODIS-e or VCP to upload a new one :)

You may be right, however Obdeleven has a one touch app that seems to claim otherwise. I cannot vouch for whether this works or not, the OP should visit the OBDeleven forums for further information.

Yup - already subscribed to the ODB forum too.  Apologies if I've complicated the discussion, but was wondering if anyone is for or against the choice of the +2 wheel change; ET50 or the more aggressive looking (still flush and more common) ET40/38/35 offsets.  Not planning on lowering springs or coilovers for now.

I can't see going up to 18s causing issue, as long as you stay as close as possible to the rolling diameter of the current wheels. .

Vrs 18s are 18x7.5j et51 with 225/40/18 tyres.

i recently put 15mm spacers alround on my vrs taking the offset to et36.(also on h+r 25mm lowering springs)

Also worth noting that the facelift vrs has different front and rear track widths from the factory than a standard octavia (slightly narrower at the front and wider at the back)

Getting the wheels to sit right in the arches can transform the look of a car IMO so I'd personally go for a lower offset wheel, they look better.

Thanks @vrs'burks  That's a beauty you've got there!  Yup, concur lower offsets look better!

How's the handling though?  Not sure if I'd want to use spacers or just get wheels with the lower ETs..

I can't tell that it handles any differently at all. . I ran my fabia vrs with spacers for 7+years and could never tell the difference with that either.

Obviously with a wider track stability should be improved, but its a roadcar i carry my son and missus around in not a track car so I'm not throwing it around bends anyway 😅

Good pts. Perhaps I'm over thinking. Guess the decision on the ET goes with fitment and looks then!! 😅😁

Thanks again 👍
