MOT failed on headlights

Featured Replies

I have a 2004 Fabia hatchback that failed the MOT on headlights. Something about the pattern not being right, and a polish being required. It is a 1.2HTP, engine code AWY.

This has happened for several years running. The usual solution is to take it to a garage who perform a placebo treatment and issue an invoice. It then passes the retest because I have an invoice for a repair. The headlights work perfectly fine in that they illuminate the road well.

I wondered if someone had a better solution, or knew the manufacturers code for replacement headlights. The car is an LHD import, but back in the day there was no difficulty fitting the headlights, so the current ones should be standard parts.

Many thanks in advance.

By far the smartest and easiest thing to do is to compound cut and polish the headlights, I do it every year before the MOT, takes ten minutes.

Many thanks for the replies. Does anyone have any comments about https://www.autodoc.co.uk/dpa/13161679 and https://www.autodoc.co.uk/dpa/13161703 ? They are under half-price of the ones at https://www.eurocarparts.com/ that someone mentioned earlier. Any warnings about compatibility would be especially helpful. It is a .co.uk site, but there is nothing obvious to indicate if they are RHD. Thanks again.

I don't think the Autodoc ones are RHD, I believe they're LHD. I enquired regarding their 'Johns' headlights, which is when they informed me that they are LHD only.

Masquerading as a UK local site, but actually Berlin based.

Yep and they are actually 4 more firms which claim to be UK based as well.

It's a bit like ECP (Euro Car Parts) having sister firms, such as CarParts4Less who I used for my lights.

I went with carparts4less as they were cheap and stated the headlights were RHD. Their customer service was a bit special, but probably broadly what someone driving an 18-year-old Skoda would want. You may have a better experience if you create an account before ordering.

The rather brief MOT re-test passed.

Many thanks to everyone who replied :-)
