Oil Coolers: Standard fitment, oversight or unnecessary?

Featured Replies

Might be being a bit thick here, and sorry I can't do a search at this time because I get an error message say module disabled, but a fair number of people are running 300bhp + from their 1.8T's. However, I never hear or read anything about oil coolers.

Pardon my ignorance , but it might be that the standard 1.8T has a cooler already, but then again I never see tuners flogging aftermarket uprated versions as they do for every other bit of the engine. Equally I'm sure I don't see it mentioned here (though as I say, I can't do a search at the mo).

I would have thought that a oil cooler would be pretty much essential on a highly tuned turbo-ed engine. So am I barking up the wrong tree, or is this a secret for those in the know only? Curious to know more.

The TDI engines have a cooler on the front, which is what the oil filter sits in IIRC - unless there's a mod for the 1.8T to have an additional one?? Its news to me too. Is your car still at TSR? :P

The Leon Cupra R has an oil cooler (mounted behind the "S" badge on the front, I believe) but the Octavia 1.8T does not.

 That's not funny........ Custom made pistons from the US were supposed to have a turnaround time of 4-6 weeks. It took 14 weeks for them to come back and then they were wrong! Still, Neal would like to get the car back to me by the end of the month, but something tells me that's not going to happen.

On a positive note, look at it this way, saves me worrying about wasting precious water washing the car in face of a presumably almost certain hosepipe ban in Hampshire; don't need to buy expensive Optimax; tax ran out at the end of Feb and the car is currently SORNED; and cos it's bright yellow, I need not worry about Neal forgetting it's in his workshop. :D

One day, it'll be back............

Lee, never heard of anyone fitting extra coolers so I am assuming its not a problem (bearing in mind assume is sometimes read as "making as aasss out of you & Me)

Re Oil & I may have mentioned this after you lost your engine but the oil pickup is one side of the Engine so theres a potential for Oil starvation on long long sweeping corners with high G forces. I have fitted a baffled sump just in case on mine, IIRC it was 70-80 squid, not much in the scheme of things

PS the grills still here & can wait as long as you want

Sorry Lee - I assumed you would have it back by now. :o

The joys of engine modding..... :(

i suppose you could enquire about having something fitted if you thought it could cause a problem but like others have said no ones really covered it before or mentioned fitting / upgrading anything.

i'll ask a Cupra R driving friend at work to see if he can confirm if his has one.

IIRC Demon Tweeks do a nifty little kit that bolts on behind the oil filter and runs a feed out to a small front mounted cooler before routing back to the filter.

If he doesnt know off the top of his head, check for an aditional slot about 6 inches wide between the "S" badge and number plate ;) If it has the slot it has an oil cooler, if it doesnt have the slot it doesnt have the cooler.

Yup' date=' fitted via a sandwich plate usually and fitted as standard to MK1 golf GTi's then on Mk2's moved to something like this

IIRC Bill Brockbank (badgerbill) might have one on his Ibiza so a chat with him might be worth it, his cars 400+ bhp & does get used to its full potential ;) ;)

Ta for info, really question was aimed as a general enquiry, I don't think I have the need for a cooler anymore than other people here, still not sure why they don't seem to be necessary.

Meanwhile Stuart, please keep hold of grille, I do still want it.
