Why didn't I do this AGES ago.....

Featured Replies

Went to see a man about cruise today down in a very windy part of the south coast. Took us about 3hours to fit it as the car was being her usual self and fought us (well mainly the man)all the way! But what a difference. Ive always prided myself on maintaing a steady speed on the motorway and hence keeping the mpg up. But cruise is even better. The car seems to like it and it is very smooth in operation and hold the speed very well regardless of any incline.

 A very big thanks to VRStu.

Glad you like it

Kind of a seperate question, but is there a way of adjusting factory cruise as mine's really club footed - fine standard but jerky when running a bit more - can the throttle opening be reduced to say 20% max when using cruise?

I was impressed by cruise control a few years back when driving my Dad's golf.

Have you noticed how much speed people lose when they go up hill without cruise??

It's now something that I consider a standard in my list of wants from a car. Although it's main benefit too me is the ability to tap my feet in stereo going down the motorway! :P

I think I know what you mean, when accelerating using the cruise control + button it's accelerates at what feels like full throttle. My old car did this as well, pehaps VrsStu can shed some light?

The Fabia may be different but the Octavia only uses part throttle to accelerate.

Set it at 60, slow down to about 30 in 2nd then press "Res" - you'll soon feel how much throttle it uses to accelerate ;)

Glad all was well for the journey home Andy.

I'm not aware of any adjustment available for the acceleration parameter of the CC system.

If you use the + button to accelerate it does seem to be very jerky - rarely use it myself. If I want to increase speed I'll use my foot until I reach the speed I want and press the set button again.

Is the Jerkiness only on Fabias that have had cruise retro-fitted?

No.

We had a vRS with factory cruise which was exactly the same.

That woul dsuggest there is no way of adjusting it then - if the factory one had been smoother you could assume Skoda changed something

please dont try 60 in a fabia vrs in 2nd you'll be walking hame!!!

for me i love changing into 4th at 60 (in my van  )

What I noticed on the Mondeo is that it varies how much throttle is used depending on how you have been using the accelerator pedal previously. For example if I've been making good progress, settled at cruise, then slowed down and hit resume, the car is on a mission to get back up to speed. If I've been driving Miss Daisy, settled at cruise, then slowed down and hit resume, the car will slowly accelerate up to cruise speed again. I don't know if it just has two modes (full and part throttle), or whether there are degrees of part throttle.

Would be interesting to know if the Fabia behaved the same :D

Since when does an instructor drive like Miss Daisy.....

Still get close when th car is marked up..... But when its not and its a full moon HAHA HAHAHA!!!!!

I must admit I use the same technique, use the accelerator and then reset the cruise.

I do drive like Miss Daisy :daisy: most of the time and on the rare occasion I use the stalk to accelerate it reminds me how much the VRS can shift!

Stuck in a 1.4TDI estate at the minute, missing my VRS and cruise control. Hopefully I'll get her back tomorrow! :woohoo:

Have to be said this is the best cruise Ive used. On a Fiat I drove a few years ago the speed wandered all over the place, good 5mph in each direction. Ford are pretty good but still seem to hunt. But this VAG system held my mph within 1mph according to the road angel despite some serious grades both up and down on the M3 over the downs and over Reigate Hill on the M25. Simply superb.

It is a good system they have, even better that we can add it to the cars ourselves.

As you said earlier, it's surprising how much other people vary their speed.

My car uses full throttle to resume, which usually means full on 2bar acceleration. And as the car doesn't "drive around" the boost surging  which I've got used to doing, I usually accelerate myself and reset rather than resume. :)

My Oem cruise is smooth as silk, it picks up nicely.

Mine was standard-fit cruise and it's identical in behaviour to retro-fitted cruise from what I can tell.

It sure gets up to speed sharpish :) Not a problem generally

Absolutely right about realising how badly people stick to their speeds, but then even without cruise I found that :P

The Vauxhall cruise I had before used the brakes on hills  Sadly the Skoda cruise doesnt do that :(

Have anybody in the hampshire or easily drivable area fitted cruise to an Octy before (got a TDi). I was considering DIYing when warrenty expires, but not all that sure.

Stuart J has it on both of his IIRC

;)

I must say, I have to question the accuracy of the computer. I drove up from Exeter to central London this morning and over 180 miles it says I have done 65.8mpg !! I have yet to fill the tank up and work it out manually, but this figure seems quite high. I did take it easy mind - rarely went above 70 and had cruise on as much as possible so I suppose it's possible.

Cruise holds it nicely at any speed although in 5th and 6th, it will tend to speed up a little on a steepish incline though as there's no engine braking. It settles down again very quickly though.

To be honest, I don't think I've seen my average drop below 50 on any trip since I've had the car - short or long, town or country!

On a TDi Octavia it is a very very easy job. I'd say it'll take about an hour and a half.

Happy to help anyone with an Octavia do the install but Hampshire is a little too far from Staffs I guess.

Check Stu's site ;) - and yes he can fit it & he lives in Hampshire.
