Featured Replies

evenin all,

might have the furby on a strip on sunday, just wondering what to expect standard? got a lad in a tuned 306 HDi that wants to hand my **** to me. my tuned hdi ran a 16.5. is this poss in a standard furby?

also what rpm you change at for best oomph?

cheers, Niall

Octy 2.0 tdi dsg goes quartermile somewhere in 16.3 seconds, so fadia should do it a little faster IMO. Changepoint somewhere around 4000-4200rpm. (130hp/4000rpm)

I got a 16.69 in a standard vRS, best I could manage post remap was 16.26 - not too impressive but there was a lot of wheelspinning, and from the look of things, I may have had the beginnings of a knackered MAF too. Apparently the trick is to pull off in second gear, so I'm told. No point trying to pull off sensibly in first because the car will still want to break traction once the torque peaks, even from a wheelspin-free start.

Also please keep in mind a certain Jason snapped his drive shaft(s?) during a (very?) enthiustiastic getaway attempt on a strip.

Admittedly his has been tweaked a tad more than most :o - but still, just be aware of it. Might be worth having a few gentle attempts on a private road - which would be a quiet road, not one where a car may come around ;) - I have a feeling if you manage to get the getaway right you will probably shave a fair bit of time off, wheelspin will be a problem for sure though.

What tyres are you running?

Was runnig Michelins or Kumho 712s on the first attempt, don't remember.

Now I'm running Falken FK452s which are ordinarily very sticky.

I'm managed a 16.26 with a standard vRS. Well all except a pd160 intake and green filter.

Anyhow I weigh well over 20 stone plus I run with a full interior and my bowling ball in the car, so weight isn't a problem for me. But I did drop my front tyre pressure to 20psi for more grip. To launch the car just drive it off the line, hold the car on the clutch at the biting point, use no throttle, then when the lights go, blast it. Don't try launching with any revs as you'll light up the tyres. I change out of 1st at 3500, 2nd at 4000, 3rd at 4500.

OK that's all the tips I'll give, have fun.

Another tip that I have heard is for anyone with coilover suspension, I don't have it though so can't say how effective it is. If you raise the rear suspension and lower the front it actually forces the front tyres into the road thus creating more traction.

The above sounds good. I found much the same. Dont set any revs, just biting point and gas when the lights change, even let it bog a little, you may need to feather the throttle off around 2500rpm and get it back on full again as you head for 3000, depending on tyres and track state. Too much gas at any point in 1st will see wheelspin and lost time. If you are really on it, youm may even lose grip in 2nd if clumsy matching the revs between changes. Again, wheelspin = lost time and you have to get off the gas to settle it down. Get it just right and I would guess low 16s should be easily attainable. Possibly high 15s but let us know how you go.

ran the 206 off the line in 2nd - whole second of a difference. running t1 r's on the front. i know how to launch it just the in gear changes i was looking at. looks like it might be close with the 306... will let boys know on monday. bring on FCS

Those shiftingpoints are far from the best, you could do a better time with right shiftpoints. Read the couple following text to understand when is the right time to shift:

"There are no exceptions; a car running at its (net) power peak can accelerate no harder at that same vehicle speed. There is no better gear to choose, even if another gear would place the engine closer to its torque peak. You'll find that a car running at peak power at a given vehicle speed is delivering the maximum possible torque to the tires (although the engine may not be spinning at its torque peak). This derives immediately from first principles in physics."

"A car accelerates hardest with gearing selected to stay as close as possible to the engine *power* peak, subject to the traction capability of the tires."

"Not all cars should be shifted at the redline for maximum performance. But it's true for many cars. You can determine optimal shift points by graphing horsepower vs. velocity or transmission torque vs. RPM. Engine torque alone will not determine shift points."

Based on this powergraph you should shift always somewhere around 4200-4400rpm. If someone wants to do a good 1/4mile time you should calculate right shiftpoints from gear ratios.

well 0 - 60 was 7.91s

sqm was 16.31s - still mighty wheelspin launching in second though!!!

pretty much killed the clutch though , also had no back seats in or parcel shelf, and tyres where on different PSI's with about 80 miles left in the tank IIRC.

Standing quarter at Santa pod in the Fabia, running Kumho V70a k9 compound (too hard btw), stripped interior -
