1.6 AEE engine mods

Featured Replies

hello Skodians

Im a fairly new owner of a felly Fun and looking to do some mods!

Im in the works of the front brake upgrade and now im looking at improving suspension and engine.

From what I understand from research mainly on VW forums the cheapest and most cost effective mods for my engine are bike throttle bodies a 4-2-1 manifold and 268 cams.

I was thinking of doing the cams and exhaust since the TB is pretty visible (?) and will probably make the car fail inspection.

My questions are:

The manifolds sold (on ebay) for Polos 6N with the same engine fit under the fellys hood and I only have to mod the exhaust from there on or they dont fit at all?

Is anyone here experienced with a cam swap on this engine?

Does anyone know if HP suspension on any other brand still make coilovers for it? Stock dampers are pretty expensive and hard to get so it might be worth it, also  lowering springs are shipped from UK so they get more expensive to import ATM

All the opinions are welcome since this is a fairly new subject for me and theres not that much information online on modding this engine especially on a Fun

TY

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Even seeing a Fun on the road makes me happy. Rare and beautiful.

Every car should work like a Swiss clock. On modern cars, ECU makes that possible but it's not flexible for modding. ECU may not play nice with CAM modifications.

From what I've read from some sources, you have two routes to take. Either go backwards and install carb(s) and make your further adjustments on the carb or go forward and install a custom ECU. Preferably one you can program on your own with an ordinary laptop.

With a custom ECU, you can really have control over the engine. Otherwise, stock ECU will do what it does, ignoring critical modifications.

Of course, I'm not an expert. Experienced members can offer better advice. 🙂

Hey R_Blue

been looking into that ECU thing, found that polo ACE chips could run this engine but they are not available anymore... next route could be a megasquirtsince carbs could make the car fail inspection here in Portugal

does anyone have any other stuff to add on the topic?

i know that mods on this engine are not economically viable but still would like to get more info to make a good choice.

Thanks for your help

I've been here since last year. There are only a few regulars in the Favorit/Felicia section.

Some of the members here had some complications lately with their cars. Maybe they lost some of their spirit or they are just busy.

I think sometimes it's easier to do complete swap. How are the regulations in Portugal for engine swaps? Also how are the prices for used car parts or donor cars?

You need to get complete engine with its electronic parts too. So you don't need to deal with immobilizer issues.

You have options like 1.4 16V 100HP and 1.6 16V GTI 125HP.

Please check this topic. Very informative.

A dream engine for any Felicia owner.

Felicia Fun is already a rare car. With this engine upgrade, yours might become the only one in all Portugal.

Next summer, have FUN! 😉

Awesome! Post some photos when you're done, please :) AFH Fun is something Škoda should've made.

Edit: If you manage to find a 1.3MPI Felicia, get its gearbox. The AEE gearbox might be a bit too long for AFH.

You'd be looking for something like 180bhp to get those revs and that speed.

So, is that' why @Papez suggest a shorter gearbox? Or is that about mid ranges? Or maybe both?

Hey guys! I will post when its in the road. I dont think ill be able to find a 1.3 box since no cars were sold in portugal with that engine I think.

Im going for the sleeper look under the bonnet with the original cover if i can manage to put it there and the original air filter box since i didnt find the one from the AFH and I already have a KN filter on mine (the air here is pretty clean so no worries about that filter)

Thanks for your help and opinions.. Ill be sure to keep you guys posted

Both - AFH peak torque is around 4k RPM and power peak around 6k, so it requires pretty short gearbox for maximum performance. AEE on the other hand is like a diesel - in fact, Felicia gearbox has similar gearing to Fabia SDI.

That's exactly what I'd like to see - as it would look from the factory. I think that the original filterbox would be fine even with a paper insert, it seems to be designed for a 100hp engine :)

it's a bit unfortunate that you cannot source a shorter box - but Škoda put the AEE box to the 40kW 1.3 (only the 50kW variant had the short gearbox), so the AFH should be able to run with it, too.

hey guys! Finally done

Still got a long way to go to get the car perfect but were getting there! engine and brakes are in, next some minor things to fix such as a proper job of insulating the windscreen and all the locks and starter key thing needs fixing too.

then ill refurbish the suspension and lower it slightly (30mm)

here are some pics. We built the engine mount different than on the original post to keep the belt cover intact.. also didnt need to change the radiator spot because of it.

Nice, do you have some more pictures of the mount?

The engine looks like it was meant to be there. Except for the two filter boxes :D Is there any good looking solution to that?

I feel so happy for you.

AFH swap is an excellent upgrade.

Did you upgrade the brakes too?

Just what I think.

"With great power comes great responsibility"

That translates into better brakes.

All that I can say, you did it like pro. Well done.

I'd like to hear how an AFH sounds in a Felly too.

Hey guys.. I have a problem 😅

That little can that's used on the aee for emissions I think and for the cabin not to smell like gasoline can't be connected the same way with the AFH

Do you know what should I do to stop the smell inside. It's supposed to get worse in the summer and it doesn't bother me that much but ladies don't agree 😅😅

It's simple the purge canister connects to the tank vent and the outgoing side somewhere with good vaccum ie underneath the tb or you can t any good old vaccum line. The evap valve should therefore be controlled by the ecu. As if its in operation the whole time you are going to have troubles at idle.
