Turbo / Supercharger upgrade

Featured Replies

Any advice on a turbo upgrade for my mk2 Fabia 1.4 vRS?

Do I have any options? Engine and DSG have both had a remap.

Can the turbo and/or supercharger be upgraded? What's the next upgrade step?

Thanks.

Supercharger can’t really be upgraded , but the turbo charger can be changed for a OEM hybrid one from RTMG (other companies exist but these guys are the best at the 1.4 twincharger)

Thank you. Will give them a call.

Supercharger no, But it can be deleted and one massive turbo if you want to go that far.

For the turbo RTMG are the go to for bolt on however you pretty much fit any big turbo if you know someone who could fabricate it to the OEM turbo manifold as this comes as the one unit as standard. 400+ bhp builds abroad are running GTX 2860 GEN 2 turbo's with one 1.4 tsi managing to make 500bhp on the standard box💥.

Bare in mind you'll need a turbo mapped in.

If you do that though you are making a rolling race weapon as unless it’s fast spool , low down in the Rev range you’ll have no boost so no power

You can't have fast spool with a big turbo on a small engine, deleting the supercharger just makes it worse because net gasflow drops even more.

Rallycross monsters used to inject fuel and air directly into the turbo like a rocket engine to make them spool faster, the downside was a huge jet of flame out of the exhaust.

With the 1.4 TSI I'd be looking to maximise area under the curve, not create a gearbox smashing surge of power up the top at the expense of driveability and reliability.

Headline figures are for dunces.

Great comment mate agree totally  , the boys in turkey use water methanol to get the boost to come in faster , you can get fast spool turbos , A45 Amg’s have fast spool turbos , they use ball bearing turbos , with a small electric motor which spools up in low Rev range

I would just buy a faster car in the first place...........:nerd:

I absolutely could do that. I've been looking at a BMW 435d. Super quick, lovely looking and a nice place to be.

But that's not the point with this vRS. It's a toy. A bit of a project. Something to have a bit of fun with.

I could chuck 20 grand at the BMW and job done.

I could also throw a few grand at the Fabia and have a laugh.

AMG A45 uses a twin-scroll turbo, this will spool faster than a single-scroll but there's no electric motor and the Borg Warner B03 is a journal bearing turbo so I suspect you've been listening to a load of old pub talk, which is fine, but you should learn to ignore it without offending the spitting idiot telling you and you certainly shouldn't repeat it.

VW Group were going to do them.

Tricky having an electric motor on the hot side of an engine, the magnets wouldn't last long, I'm aware of the sci-fi existence of these things but the A45 is a real car with a very oversize turbo for a 2.0 four banger, hence the crazy power output, I imagine it's  pretty laggy nonetheless.

Also water methanol injection has been around for donkeys ears, it's a strategy to prevent detonation by quenching hot spots and does nothing to help spool, if anything it increases lag due to the latent heat losses incurred during vaporisation. Removing heat means less energy to spin that turbo.

GCSE Physics FTW.

Thanks all for the input.

Most, if not all of these recent comments, go way over my head.

Should I just go with RTMG? I sent them a message yesterday and am looking forward to their reply.

@DutyPaid

Who remapped the Engine & DSG and is this to Stage 1,

and have you no other hardware upgrades yet?

I imagine the engine bay is a completely different layout to the A45 since there's more space to play with, nonetheless I expect it to be unreliable although MB are unlikely to admit it, far less issue a recall.

They'll be beta testing it at the customers expense.

It depends how far you want to go with the car mickmartin is right technically you could fit whatever turbo you wanted if you had a manifold made , that being said for a bolt on turbo exactly the same as the OEM one just with custom internals RTMG do three specs

300 RS ( capable of 300 BHP)

360 RS (capable of 360 BHP)

380 RS (capable of 380 BHP & 2 bar of boost!)

baring mind stock injectors will get you a Max of 275HP @ 1.72 bar of boost

after that like I stated earlier you have to run meth to Compensate the lack of fuel and it’s a cheaper way than upping the CC of the injectors … with water mixed with the meth it also cools & cleans the valves and keeps the bore cooler which is what you want aswell

The remaps were done (to Stage 1) by a company in Stockport.

A larger intercooler and cat-back exhaust have been fitted.

This is a complete 180, but I may be selling my vRS as the aforementioned BMW 435d is now a distinct possibility, and I don't need two vehicles.

Is Autotrader the best bet or is there something more specialised?

Any car forum with Skoda enthusiasts might be a good place.

The For Sale section of Briskoda being a good choice.

A small fee to advertise and people might easily be able ask questions about what you have etc if looking for your type of car.
