DSG oil change, proof it's done

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Booking my car in for a gearbox oil change and due to my non trust in any garage, is there a way to know it's done?

I guess I'll never know on the filter, they could just clean the bowl, to look like it's been touched, but what about the oil, will OBDEleven show anything, if I look at something before and after?

Don't think there is really. You could ask for the old filter and o ring for inspection.

You could say put a bit of tape accross the filter housing that would need to be disturbed to remove....

If you really can not trust a place and think they will defraud you of money then best not use them.

This ^^.

Any reason you can share why you don’t trust them?

An idea is to ask if the dealer principal / manager is in and can you have a word.    You can tell them that proper servicing and maintenance and trusting places is an issue and can they assure you the Master Tech is on the ball and they properly supervise fitters or apprentices that might work on your car.   It might offend them but then they have a nice demonstrator and a suit and the customers keep them in their lifestyle.

Put a little scratch on the current oil filter cover. Put the scratch to line up with a gearbox casing marking, or if no gearbox marking put the little scratch across both.
No way would the cover screw back on to the same end position. A piece of tape is too obvious if you want to be discreet.

But I agree with the trust issues mentioned. I never did any of this when I had my cambelt done by an Indy.

I don't trust any garage, so many lies and bull from so many over the years.

I've used this garage before for MOTs and many people use for a simple yearly service.

I'm sure they'll be fine, but it's a bit of an awkward job and people always take short cuts.

Maybe I should be more optimistic!

Yes, understand. And even skoda wording is often vague even within the 40k mileage specified. For example, at one stage, wording on skoda site was dsg oil and filter change, if required.

Was the if required relating to the oil change the filter or both. Most now just seem to say dsg oil change.

There are quite a few post where dealers weren't doing the filter. It's pretty difficult to do without removing the battery.

A mark or tap edit: scratch in a non obvious place would do it so far as the filter housing being undone or not.

But as others say, if you have a relationship with garage, maybe tell them you're nervous due to being burned before. It may help them understand and help with the trust!!! They may let you stay for example.

I don't mistrust everyone with respect to car repairs but I do think a,lot can get missed or overlooked in a busy workshop skoda dealer or independent. I know when I do all the servicing myself I know what's done, any shortcuts and if I make a mistake, I've got no one else to blame!!

I have to get it done to keep the warranty going. After this service, I can go back to doing it myself, then I know things are done lol.

Maybe I'll start to trust them.😁

There is no requirement for a warranty in the UK to stay valid that a Main Dealership is being paid £215 or however much they are charging.

Just that it is carried out using the correct fluid and parts (filter in this case) & that is understood in the UK to be a VAT registered place, but that is not in the T&C's.

The Issue with VAQ diffs, Haldex & DSG's is that some dealerships employees do not know their arse from elbow and do servicing as they should and as an Independent VW Specialist might.

They are often Ex VW Group trained Master Techs that care about customers much more than their ex employers did.

Quick question, garage has quoted £228inc vat for the DSG, but this is for 5ltr of oil, but they are saying they usually use around 2ltr, does that sound right?

I don't have access to my service data to check at work.

Edit - I'm not going to Skoda, this is a local garage

No idea what DSG they use only 2 litres of oil in, maybe if they service a DQ200 or work on one, these have 2 oils, in the box and in the MCU.

5.5 litres is about right, so if they have all the gear and more than ideas then good @ that price,

A main Dealer participating in the 3-10 year old cars fixed price service and maintenance are £215.

?

If you have a VAQ front Diff has it been serviced. @3 years / 30,000 miles is the interval for that.

5 litres is the normal amount to order when doing a DSG oil change.

Usually around 4.3L is drained when undoing the bottom plug, and was around that when I last did mine.

If they're only draining 2L, then either the box was very dry and probably would be broken at that point, or it wasn't a wet DSG box.

2017 car, so no VAQ front diff.

Their system says 5ltrs, so they are ordering that.

They say they do these, so maybe the receptionist I spoke to was just a bit mixed up.
