Clutch leaking fluid down the pedal onto the floor

Featured Replies

My Octavia 2016 mk 3 has recently started leaking fluid inside the cabin onto the floor.

From closer inspection, it stems from the clutch pedal. More precisely, it seems to be coming from the metal rod the pedal pushes in (please excuse the terminology - not a mechanic.)

From searching on Google and Briskoda, it appears others have previously had issues with either the clutch master/slave cylinder. Can't quite determine if it's the same issue here, so thought I'd ask the pros.

The clutch itself is "fine". It doesn't fall to the floor and seem to be as responsive as ever. I have not put in extra clutch fluid. The liquid is clear and oily - doesn't smell.

Is this something I can fix myself?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

Only if you feel competent to change the clutch master cylinder.

Thanks for the reply.

So it is that, you reckon?

Willing to give it a shot, at least.

Guy at work, on his VW (assume it's the same part) had his master cylinder let go. It's a bit of a pain to swap, as there's not much room, but certainly possible.

Seem to recall it was around £50 for the part.

Plenty of vids on YouTube showing how to do it.

Yeah mate, been watching a lot of them to get an idea of how to go about it.

Just wanted to make sure the clutch master cylinder was the culprit. Ordering one now

I think it's 'common-ish' from when we were looking into it. Cant buy a seal kit, which is annoying!

Clutch master cylinder, a rare failure. That pushrod that you assume is metal is actually plastic as is the entire cylinder assembly with the exception of an internal magnet to activate the reed switch.

About £118 retail from Skoda/TPS, as low as €18 delivered on the internet for a pattern part.

A tricky job first time round especially fitting the rigid pipe into the cylinder, make sure the pipe seal did not detach and remain in the old cylinder and that it fits back on the pipe end with a forced "click" do not put it in the new cylinder & then fit the pipe, it will not seal.

In fact given that the cylinders dont wear and leak that pipe seal may well be where your leaking fluid is coming from, has any work been done before in that area?

No works has been done.

Would it be easier to change the pipe seal? I've already ordered the new master cylinder, but perhaps I can still cancel.

Thanks for the heads up.

Unless the cylinder has been removed or replaced then it wont be the seal leaking, its not like an oil seal that wears.

Today I saw the same wet spot on the floor under the clutch pedal on my car. What was the problem? Do you remember how much it was to get it fixed?
