Rattle from under the dash

Featured Replies

Hey everyone

Patient: octavia mk3

Symptoms: When driving over rough surfaces I could hear rattling noises coming from under the front dash. I've been able to 'replicate' the sound by hitting the steering wheel when stationary. I kept hitting the wheel while planting my other hand  at different spots under the steering wheel column and I made it stop.

Turns out my leg compartment air vent seems to be loose which causes it to hit the clutch pedal crash strut (see attached videos and pictures).

Could anyone check whether it's similar on their car? If not, does anybody know how to fix it? The obvious DIY solution is to stick some rubber/cardboard in between the vibrating parts, but I reckon there must be some bolt which can get tightened to get rid of the problem permanently.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

What year is your mk3? In the golf mk7, mine is a my16, it was a common fault for the airbag to rattle on the containment area inside the steering wheel. I removed it and packed with some rigid foam in a few places. But after a few months it's back. Apparently an updated airbag fixed the problem but replacing an airbag for a rattle seemed a bit ott even for me!

It's been a while since original post, I just recently came across it.... I was looking for the source of the rattle in my wife's car... We had this rattle for ages but could never find it. I initially looked at almost every plastic part in the dash, as the sound was almost coming from the inside of the dash.

I have checked the metal part you shown on the photo, and realized this part rattles when it touches the plastic vent pipe coming down to footwell just above the clutch pedal (and because it was resonating in this pipe it sounded like somewhere inside the dash). Using a sharp knife I cut down a tiny amount of the plastic tube, so it was not touching this metal bracket, but also used some material and cable ties to wrap up the bracket...

Result .... I can now hear multitude of much quieter rattles all around :D but I'm happy as the main noise-maker is finally gone!

Thank you for pointing me in this direction!
