Storage Compartment - Open Warning

Featured Replies

During a drive today, my missus opened the storage compartment (glove box) to get a drink and immediately there was a bleeping and warning on the dash. I’ve looked in the handbook and there’s no mention of this safety feature; anyone else noticed this? Forgive me if this has been mentioned before here but AFAICS, I can’t search the S3 forum alone on my phone.

What did the warning say?

AFAIK there has never been a sensor/microswitch added to the glovebox to determine open/closed status.

But there is a heck of a lot of wiring/fuses and some control modules behind them.  Odds are high one was disturbed and put warning on the dash, a scan might reveal a fault code that you could look into maybe.

The car image came up and the tailgate open warning was flashing.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’ll drop the tray, have a look and give the fuses a shove and see if that fixes it.

I can 100% tell you what youve done.

Recently by any chance have you replaced the tailgate lights with LED versions by any chance or any other car bulb with a LED variant?

And does the same thing happen when you turn on the drivers interior lamp?

@numskull For my car, and a lot of the older models there is no microswitch.

For your car there is a microswitch to operate the light when glovebox is opened.

Sorry for any possible confusion that may have been caused.

The circuit to do with the microswitch is a dumb circuit - power to the switch, switch controls bulb, ground. Nothing special and no bcm control or way for the car to know if the glovebox is open.

Cheers AS. I replaced the incandescent boot bulbs with early LED cobs when I got the car; they failed about four months ago and I replaced those with full sealed LED units; no warnings any very bright. I’ve never touched any of the tailgate lights.
No, turning on the drivers interior lights doesn’t repeat the warning. Oddly this only happens when the car is moving.
PS - I replaced the indicators about a year or so ago with LED’s, but this phenomenon has only just begun.

Sorry when i said tailgate i meant tailgate inner lid/load area. Guessing removing these bulbs solved the issue?

Ahh right. Yep, you're right; they're the culprits!

I haven't permanently removed them as they're so much better than the original ones, but I discovered if I switch off Stop/Start, the issue goes away; how odd is that??

Sorry for the late reply - it's the diagram stating the tailgate is open.

I have the same issue on RM23 Superb Scout which had originally LED in trunk light which was very week so i replaced it with stronger ones from Aliexpress whivh i had in RM18 (there was no issue) and now have this strange error that when opening glove box on VC pop up info that tailgate is open:)) sometimes same error appears when i forget./or kids to turn interior roof light and close the car. Did anyone found a way to solve it no coming back to original LEDs?
