Brake replacement discs and pads advice

Featured Replies

Hi all, my rear discs and pads need replacing, quite worn pads and discs in the usual terrible shape of scoring and rust. Currently on original factory ones at 4 years old and 37K miles. What have people put on if not going with standard OEM ones. Mines is a 1 4 tsi Sportline estate 6 speed manual.

I'd like low dust and good quiet brakes. Dealer quoting £338 for fitting OEM. Thoughts and help appreciated.

Both rear brake disc sizes are part of an ATE rear brake system, so I would go with ATE brake pads and brake discs. ATE are owned by Continental tyres, so are one of the best brake systems.

There are only two different brake disc sizes fitted to the Superb MK3. 300x12mm and 310x22mm. The 300x12mm is a solid rear disc and the 310x22mm is a ventilated rear disc.

As you can see from the links below, the 300x12mm rear brakes discs are about £50 each, and the ceramic brake pads are about £50 for the set. So that's about £150 for all the parts including shipping.

Thanks, I've had a quick look and it mentions wear indicator not available on these pads. I assume my current ones have a wear indicator, but I don't know for sure.

The rear brake pads don't have a wear indicator.

I always fit EBC stuff once my OEM are needing replaced. Last few cars I’ve gone with BSD discs and yellow stuff pads.

I just fitted Delphi pads and discs, they may not be top of the range but they were far better than the original ones, which were knackered after 20,000 miles.

You might want to avoid EBC rear brake pads for the 300x12mm rear brake discs on the Superb MK3. This is because EBC made a mistake and started selling rear brake pads from the 272x10mm rear brake discs on the Karoq.

If you use these Karoq rear brake pads on the Superb MK3 they will wear a narrower groove on the rear brake discs because the friction material covers a smaller area.

EBC can't correct their mistake because too many EBC customers are now using these Karoq rear brake pads on their Superb MK3. If EBC started selling the correct rear brake pads for the Superb MK3 fitted with 300x12mm rear brake discs, customers who didn't fit new rear brake discs would have problems because of the narrower groove that the Karoq rear brake pads wear into the rear brake discs. Of course, customers wouldn't have a problem using the correct brake pads if new discs are used when new pads are fitted.

As you can see in the diagrams below, the Karoq and Superb MK3 rear brake pads are almost identical, except that the Karoq friction material has a few millimetres less height than what's on the Superb MK3 rear brake pads. Notice that the ATE 13.0460-7293.2 and ATE 13.0460-7294.2 part numbers are also almost identical.

In the diagrams below, the blue colour represents the friction material.

So if you want EBC rear brake pads for your Superb MK3 that is fitted with 300x12mm rear brake discs, order the EBC rear brake pads for a Superb MK3 with 310x22mm rear brake discs. Skoda sells the same rear brake pads (ie. same OEM part number) for both the Superb MK3 fitted with 300x12mm rear brake discs and the Superb MK3 fitted with 310x22mm rear brake discs.

Below are two diagrams of EBC rear brake pads that match the two above ATE rear brake pads. Notice the slightly smaller (less height) friction material on the Karoq rear brake pads. The friction material is shown in white, and the metal backing plate is shown in black.

Thank you for your detailed advice on getting the right pads for a Skoda Superb Estate from EBC.  Will order mine now.  Where would be best place to buy EBC discs/pads for the fronts?

Kind regards,

Kevin

Just avoid OEM disks, they really are very poor. I've used both Pagid and Brembo from ECP and can't fault them.  Buying online can be a bit of a minefield as well so I was happy to go into the store with the chassis number to ensure I was getting the right parts.

EBC brakes direct is who I use. Should be a discount code on here somewhere if you use the search function. Can’t remember if it’s 5% or 10%.
mot check their Facebook as there’s normally a discount code floating about somewhere.

Hi guys.

I am looking to replace rear brake pads and rear discs in my 2016 TDI Superb 150 Sportline Estate. Any recommendation what is good and where to shop. I was looking on Euro Car Parts for Brembo discs and pads but would like to know your opinion what is best from your experience. Also Dont need to change front yet but that probably next thing.

Brembo pads and discs (aftermarket) have got to be some of the worst ive fitted. Nothing but problems and squeaking from them.

I prefer either TRW, Pagid or ATE.

After lots of looking around, my car ended up in at Skoda for an unrelated warranty repair last year (got the all-in warranty) and I just got them to replace mine with OEM for ease whilst in. The replacement ones have been fine, no squeaks and no deterioration in terms of rust / corrosion as of yet. Price was reasonable as well. Front ones still original pads and discs (pads 60% worn now) and going strong at 44K miles and nearly 6 years old!

I dunno what are OEM on mine. And i dunno if I can find out without looking physically and try find part number on worn part. However dunno if previous owner use OEM part or aftermarket.

I use our local independent car parts place which is massively better than euro car parts. I’ve put on Delphi and Drivetec pads and discs at various times, these being fairly low budget offerings but perfectly adequate and much better than the rubbish fitted at the factory. Car now at 100k miles and new one coming soon, so it will be back to OEM rubbish <sad face>.
