Stuck Turbo???

Featured Replies

Ok folks lets have your thoughts and ideas....

On Monday night had the cruise on since Birmingham till just just south of Exeter (Telegraph Hill) so car been sitting at about 2700rpm for about 2hours. Came to the hill at absolutely no boost! Got up the hill just, pulled over and did a restart. Got some boost but not the full monty. Over the last few days being getting varying levels of boost, generally for the better, no swlishing noises, no strange whistles. Im guessing that the vanes got stuck on the turbo and are working there way loose. When I really threw it up a hill in third and err got a very high rev count it did seem to give nearly full boost all of a sudden, but there was a roundabout fast approaching! :P

Now I know on an octavia you can strip the tubo off and clean, but on a fabia how many spanners is this???

Oh no not the dreaded 'sticky tubo vanes'.

I thought this was only an Octy problem.

If not, then watch out all you Fabia VRS'

Turbos are different on the 100PD but in thoery could still suffer.

Will log a boost regulation fault though.

I'd get that checked out asap, wouldnt like to have shredded turbo bits going into the engine

OKwe now have some boost but it picks up slowly compared to usual. Going to go to a vw independant tomorrow to get it checked.

variable boost might be just a sensor. Get a fault code read first before panicking about needing a new turbo.

Never had the same in my PD100 - well only when I had a dodgy MAF - but it threw it into easily recognised limp mode.

By the way, Telegraph Hill - NOT the place to be losing boost. ;) I booted mine in 5the down the bottom of there this afternoon after work at 70, and I was doing 110 by the time I got to the top. Man I love my car. (km/h of course)

Sticky turbo vaneson Octys?

What's this all about?

The octy TDi 110 has a variable vane turbocharger, and the vanes get chocked wth crap and stick on full b oost so the engine gets an overboost error. Only way to solve it it os put a new turbo on it or clean the old one off.

Well heres a suprise when I got my dealer to read the fault codes we found guess what.......

17552 P1144 035

MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR -G70-

OPEN CIRCUIT/SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND (GND)

When we run the tests on the plug no problems.

Well bugger me thats the second MAF thats gone! Except this time no smoke... Would seem like it thinks its getting less air then it is and therefore under fueling..... Got a recon unit order, £75 so not too bad.

Certainly cheaper than another Turbo Andy.

Well got a new MAF today, the one from skoda didnt turn yp overnight so got one from vw as they had one on the shelf. Two points to note....

1) there is no longer a surcharge and the old units are now disposable!

2) the design has changed the maf now sits in a small tunnel within the large housing with a much finer mesh over the end of it.

Oh and the car now goes like stink! We even have a degree of torque steer! I just love the tdis.....

I thought all the PD ones were like this, certianly all the ones i've seen are.

My 2001 orginal housing just was one big hole with the maf sitting in it.....

I would say that a MAF change should feature alongside a Cambelt or similar these days - so many people have trouble with them.

Have to agree with Stu first one went around 50k and this one gone at 41K

Hmmm, who was the first person to mention a potentially dodgy MAF? - guess thats what you get from having run a pd100 for a week as the MAF generally disintegrates. :D;)

where is the cheapest place to get a MAF , has anybody on the forum got a supply of cheap OEM MAFs ?

Jason, Yep you were right! Thing is when it went the first time time there was a black cloud behind me the size of Buncefield! This time no smoke just a lack of power??? Dont think it did any harm as such, just very annoying having my dads corsa beat me everywhere!

SMC in Exeter would/could not even do a quick run on the diagnostic machine till the Friday, hence why it had to limp its way back to Liverpool and then to London! Was tempted to try to get in touch with you but wasnt sure if you had vagcom.

Ric, the price from dealers is now very low and about what I payed from Euro Car Parts for the first MAF. Also this one is geniune Bosch not sure what the one from Euro was.
