Correct Tyre size

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a 2012 Superb Elegance 170 4x4 manual hatch and was advised at the mot that there is some wear on the fronts.

I have been checking all the usual suspects black circles etc, and when I add my reg it says I should have 225 40 18. All of the tyres on the car are 45 profile. Is having the 45 profile likely to affect the Speedo reading tax? I’m assuming the previous owner went to 45s to improve ride comfort.

Any advice or guidance will be very much appreciated

Thanks

Chris

Your Speedo might actually be accurate as it over-reads as it comes from the factory.

You VED / Tax band already applies and nobody is increasing it as nobody is re-testing the car.

225/40/18 is the standard size. Check your fuel filler flap will confirm the same. I presume 45 profile fitted for comfort too.

The  only implication could be insurance, but this has been covered before and most are o.k. as long as road worthiness is provided.

I have the 4x4 and change the front and backs round for more even wear.

225 40 18 although the correct size from factory is just too low a profile for this car. I bought a set of 16s and  went down to 205 55 16. The difference in ride is night and day.

I know it looks crap compared with 18s but noise and consumption are so much better. Ive just refurbished my 18s and will be putting 225 45 18 on.

Meanehile i will be changing to 215 55 16 which will look and ride even better

If you have access to VCDS, you could use 235/45/18 and recode the cluster to suit.

I do have vcds, please explain. I was more worried about the clutch and gearing. But ive always wondered how others vw seat with the same engines and gearbox have bigger tyres

Measure with a tape measure the tyres when on the rims to be sure of sizes when on rims of different widths,

just so you know the circumferences as they are and not just be the sizes and calculators.

Tyres of identical sizes can be a little different when now from different manufacturers, and even from the same manufacturers when Summer, All Season, Winter etc.

.........................................

So many numbers,

so what tyres are going on the car.  Is it sometimes to be 215/ 55 R 16,

and the 18's on with 225/45 R 18 sometimes?

The correct circumference / diameter of tyre or a little taller will probably have the Speedo Accurate & the milelometer not any difference between Ooo & Ahhh.

If the consumption has improved because of narrower treads or a more ECO based tyre there is no 'Fuel Consumption' adjustment needing doing

Or is it because of the car not knowing how many miles are been covered for the fuel used?
