Rear callipers push or wind back ???

Featured Replies

Morning peeps,,

just noticed my rear discs have a really big lip on the edge so going to change them. My question is do the callipers wind back or just push back in ??? Any pointers when doing them or just straight forward

thanks peeps

Pretty sure they wind back. Was a few years ago that I changed my rear pads but don't remember it being difficult. Probably the clue to whether they do need winding back is if the pistons have a slot in them or not.

Does it go onto the swept area or not? If not, you can probably chip it off with a cold chisel.

You will need to remove the caliper carriers, which is a task in itself. Worth getting replacement bolts for, as they are a splined head which is not particularly deep. If they get a bit chewed up on the the way out you might not want to reuse them as they will not want to come out next time. That might be another 50k miles and not your concern of course.

Cheers mate thanks for that heads up,, will definitely replace the bolts. Just hope they come out as the last owner probably had the same idea re use them coz I’ll not be changing them again 🤣🤣

The pistons screw in, not an issue and special tools not required.

If everything is serviceable and you just want to remove the rust lip, just whip the calliper off and tap the disc edges with a small hammer at a 45 degree angle , rotating the disc (inner and outer edges) and the rust will fly off.  Dress with an abrasive if the urge takes you.

Wear eye protection and hold the disc to deaden the ringing sound.

It’s a pretty bad lip to be honest and I’d rather just replace discs then just whack another set of pads in,,

Cheers mate I have a wind back tool kit luckily as my old Mondeo ST was wind back and pass side calliper wouldn’t wind back with cir clip pliers so bought one to find out the calliper was seized 🤣and needed replacing anyway

Yes, if the piston doesn't turn reasonably freely it's worth overhauling the calliper.

Get some spray under the boot, let it soak in then give the piston a wiggle round with a pair of water pump pliers before you put the windback on. It doesn't work every time, just gives you the best chance of success.
