Swings and roundabouts - still best to fit and test otherwise those in the motor trade or selling the struts would say you didn't fit to see.

No, I'm suggesting that making comedy YouTube videos isn't necessarily an honest pursuit, remember all those YBF videos that were so obviously setups...

Sorry, right.  No not this video, I've been following this chap as he makes videos of the simpler stuff that will help and may be of interest to those that don't know too much about driver maintenance on their cars, like myself.

I've had three lifetimes of bad, ****-poor and abysmal car parts I could have done loads of videos without any set ups but many would have thought they must have been faked.  Even some decent or reasonable manufacturers or suppliers would take some convincing it was their product at fault and not me, the installation or my vehicle.  I've had 1 in 5,000s, 2 in 20,000 and 20 years on low volume production stuff but most often with other manufactures or suppliers just the usual "you're the first . . .". 😒

I had similar problem a few years ago. I just entered VRN into both ECP and a few other sites and picked the one with best discount/ lower price. But make certain you snap the ends into the ball joints as if not then they will come out( as I found out)

Just to say the struts I purchased arrived and I fitted them yesterday. They are perfect.

I saw a video last week that said you need to be careful undoing the clips to release them but the new units include clips so I don't know why.

One tip - have a long piece of wood or such handy to prop the boot open because though I replaced them one at a time - the remaining old one could not cope with the hatch weight.

Well done and thanks for reporting back.

I should have put the video up as it shows and reminds you to use a prop as additional and protective support whilst changing the struts as it's something you might forget in the urge to get the job done.

You get the clips because they are designed as a unit to be pushed on with the clips in position.

Yes - I meant I dont know why they say to take care undoing the old clips - as the whole unit is replaced

Obviously I've not seen or know the video you mean but my guesses are that it's a matter of H&S, potential damage /doing the job well /tidiness.

The clips are metal springs with edges so if they fly off and hit say an unprotected eye it really might not be a joke or laughing matter.  If they spring off they could  land somewhere and cause damage or future potential damage by getting trapped in something or scratching paintwork and same with not tidying them away for disposal.

They should just lift and remain on with perhaps a better made strut and some care but as we know things don't always workout the way we'd hope so perhaps the reason to suggest care.

If the old struts are only just holding their own and the ball sockets are worn then removing the first clip could result in the strut jumping off and the tailgate clouting you on the head.

When I had my first detached retina I was put in a twin room in the French hospital, as there was another Anglais in with the same injury they thought it a good idea to put us together (it wasn't!), he told me he his detachment was caused by him standing up after leaning into the rear of his car and banging his head on the tailgate, knowing the impact needed to cause such an injury in a person with normal intra-ocular pressure and that his tailgate had not dropped I struggled to understand how it could have come about.

Then his wife visited, he pretended to be asleep and it all became very clear 😆
