Driver side Xenon keeps going out.

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

The headlight on my VRS comes on and after a while flickers and then goes out. When I turn the engine off and back on it does tend to come back on but ends up doing the same thing.

Been to local garage and they suggested it may be the Ballast, so I've replaced that with no luck, still the same problem, I've swapped the bulbs over to see if it was the bulb.

I do occasionally get a buzzing noise from behind the headlight when the lights come on when I unlock the car but the light doesn't come on.

Has anyone ever had this problem and have any idea what it may be. Problem being more the fact its MOT to due. :wondering:

Thanks.

Are those Xenon's originally what came with the car?  They are either old and need replacing as a pair, if not your car is perhaps not sending enough power.

I've had the car 5 years. I'm guessing that they are the original ones as I've never had to change them. It's just really annoying as it's due MOT soon.

It's strange As it can stay on for a long time then all off a sudden goes off, but then sometimes goes off as soon as you unlock it.

Thanks for your help, may have to pop into skoda.

They will be cheaper off internet than dealers.

iirc they have about 2,000 hrs average lifespan, so probably now are gone at that age.

Sorry varoom, I've misunderstood, yes I've changed the bulbs, this is the I've replaced the bulbs twice only replaced these about 3 months ago.

But I did swap the bulbs between headlights after this started happening to see if it was a faulty bulb but just kept happening and the passenger side was fine after swapping.

The ballasts are separate components to the bulbs. So you've only tested one component pair.

Ok, so bulbs are 3 months old.

And you did replace a ballast pack.

Have you measured Voltage of car battery with car off and on?

And also check Voltages going to each headlight at the plug connector.

Check voltages and current, it wouldn't surprise me if a wire was chaffed or a connection corroded.

Hi,

A few years ago I had trouble with  front o/s light, but this time it was an indicator bulb showing failed on CanBus (with warning light). It  corrected itself after a short time and was OK for the rest of the journey. After it had done this a few times, I changed the bulb but with same fault. I then pulled out the headlight cluster plug and plugged it back in a couple of times - no more trouble since. Same fault ??  My cars HID lights are now over 14 years old and have started to show a yellow "tint" at the top of the beam when shining on a  white garage door - may be ready for some new ones.

Cheers,

Lloyd

I have this problem. I did manage to fix it for a few months. There is a cable internal to the headlight which had become chafed and was exposing some wire. I got another (broken) headlight from eBay and replaced that cable. Unfortunately the same symptoms have come back after a few months and I haven't had time to open it up and check.
