I’ve currently got a Sportline on order that’ll hopefully be here in the early part of the New Year and the only thing I’m not particularly keen on is the alloys it comes with, especially with the ‘aero inserts’

Given the option I’d have chosen something smaller but hey-ho.

My question is has anyone running the alloys without the inserts and do you have a photo of the rims without the inserts please?

Also I’m guessing the wheel nuts require a 17mm socket? I can’t seem to find any reference to the size online.

Thanks

  • There are a lot of modified vehicles in the UK with oversize tyres that have had a SVA or IVA and MOT,s and that are insured and funnily the 10% tolerance is a figment of some internet imagination.

  • @LaurenceCarr   This is how quick and easy it is, after I’ve released the 5 ‘petals’ you’ll see on my first attempt at pulling the trim off I’m not gripping the trim near enough to the centr

Apologies for the typos above but I can’t seem to edit my post…

The Karoq Sportline looks like it come with 19” Sagittarius alloys with the aero inserts.

The Kodiaq vRS has the same wheels but in 20” size, and apparently the cheese grater inserts can be removed at pdi and replacement wheel centre, logo cap and plastic wheel bolt covers if requested.

That’s great, thanks for that.

Also handy to know there’s an option of centre caps and bolt covers at PDI, the dealer didn’t mention that at the time I asked.

Cheers

Yes, Wheel nuts 17mm, well they are on my 2018 1.5 SEL Karoq

I would think that all Karoks would all be 17mm otherwise new tooling would be needed for the plastic caps etc.

Thanks for that 👍

Something else that I’ve been wondering about with the aero inserts is the potential for them to mark the alloys, marking and scuffing them from friction fit and general vibration from driving.
Has anyone got experience, good or bad with the inserts so far?

I reckon that’ll be a “Given”.

On the contrary, with the plastic insert in place surely that'd offer additional protection than an alloy without inserts?

If it were me, they'd be removed and stored in the loft until the day I sold the car because I think the trims look crap.  :D

Mmm…that’s what I’m thinking too.

Even if the trims were left in place, it’s likely that dirt would get in between the trim and the wheel and leave significant chafing marks in the long term.

Would anyone remove them regularly to clean behind the trims? Unlikely.

But hey, taking the trims off and on would also chafe the wheel paintwork.

All in all, it’s one of the stupidest decisions the the builders allowed the designers to get away with.

Let’s go back to the 60s or 70s when wheel trims were big business 😀

It is possible to keep alloys in fairly mint condition if you’re careful.

I’m always been quite obsessive with the alloys on any of the cars I’ve had and the alloys on the last car I sold still looked like new after a few years on the road.

I’ve been thinking much the same regarding dirt, grit and grime getting trapped behind the inserts and the fact that taking them off to clean may do more harm than good, what daft idea! 😆

The Missus has a Karoq on order and also isn't keen on the cheese graters so I've been tasked with finding an alternative. Centre caps and bolt covers seem the easiest solution, but are the centre caps 50mm on the 19" wheels like on the Octavia?

  • Author

Not sure on the centre caps yet but I’ve already got some (genuine) covers for the wheel nuts, going to wait and see if I can either blag some centre caps from the dealer or wait and see what size they are.

So I’ve got the 17” Scutus wheels for winter, and one of the trims already doesn't fit OK after the wheel change. Honestly it looks a lot better without the plastic trims and I’m going to give up on them. Is the center cap dimensions 50mm for 17” wheels?

Completely agree that they look better without the trims. I’m not sure yet what size the centre cap is or even if it’s a universal size across different alloys.

Have you noticed any rubbing/damage to the lacquer from having the inserts fitted?

No, the paint and finish on the rims looks ok, no scratches or any sign of damage. The trims on the other hand already have some marks on the plastic legs that fit the wheel and like I've said one of them is already loose. I'm looking on Amazon to see what hub caps I can find, and will measure internal diameter at work tomorrow, it seems it's 52mm internal and I have to be sure.

Ok, so 50-52 mm internal size hub caps - 56mm external. Found some on amazon, will buy for 10EUR, better that those aero cheese graders

Nice one, I’ll have a look and see what’s available 👍

Do the inserts make cleaning the wheels any easier?

Just got our 23 plate karoq Sportline with the 19” Saggitarius and crappy inserts. Anyone got advice on how to carefully remove for storage until the car goes back? I have nut covers and Centre hubs ready to go.

  • Author

@LaurenceCarr

Just pull them off carefully one ‘petal’ at a time, they’re a lot looser fitting than I was expecting which makes me suspect even more that they will harbour grit/dirt and rub holes in the lacquer.

I’m just waiting for my centre caps to arrive next week then mine will be permanently removed as well.

I gently prized the petal away, but the centre hub was firmly attached. I’ll try again tomorrow with a bit more force.
