How can i adjust full beam height on bi xenons with adaptive headlights ?

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

I have a MK 3 Superb L&K 4x4 with adaptive bi xenon headlights and self levelling suspension. I had all tyres replaced and the tracking done, they also recalibrated the radar at the same time. Since this was done my dipped beam dropped and the full beam points into the trees about 20 foot or so.

I adjusted the dipped beam using the screws on the headlight units using a hex allen key, so they are all fine now. But I am not able to adjust the height level of the full beam.  The mechanic I use thinks there may be a setting in VCDS to adjust them by changing the self levelling suspension settings but cannot seem to find the right option in VDCS. Would anyone happen to know where the settings maybe?

Thanks in advance

I can’t answer your question, but I have a question for you :)

How did you adjust the headlights and how many turns? I don’t mean the screw, more like did you park in front of something then adjust, how did you know it’s adjusted enough and not blinding people?

Sorry for all the questions but I’m convinced my headlights are too low, I even got Skoda to look at them and they said “it’s within range” but I think it needs to go higher

self levelling suspension

🤨 What are talking about? There is no self leveling suspension on Superb Mk3.

If you mean DCC,, it doesn't correct pitch angle depending on how much loaded your car is. DCC only adjusts the stiffness of your suspension system.

Nevertheless, there is a pitch correction system in you Xenon headlights. There is an initialisation phase upon engine start (at night). This is a kind of "headlight dance" Down / Outer sides / Inner side / straight / Up. Then your headlights are set correctly whatever the load in your car. It's only small electric motors moving headlights. Nothing to do with suspension.

AFAIK, low beams and high beams cannot be adjusted mechanically independently.

There are 2 hex screws: 1 for vertical adjustment / 1 for horizontal adjustment. But they move the complete headlight at a time.

Note: You can check on p160 of workshop maintenance manual (can be downloaded for free on cardiagn.com) if needed. ;)

DCC is also connected to Steering and Braking.

The same vehicle level sensors used by DCC also feed the headlight range control.

@mfearnuk- as @Bap33 explained - u can't adjust the low beam and high beam range separately.

The manual adjuster moves the entire headlight internals.

the mk3 pre-facelift is Bi-Xenon, i.e. it has a single xenon bulb that does both low and high beams, using the same projector housing.

To make small adjustments to the headlight throw:-

1. Park the car approx. 7m away from a wall.

2. Turn headlights on.

3. adjust the nut labeled #3 and 4 in the pic below, as needed.

make very very small turns (less than a quarter turn) each time.

u'll the beam raise or lower, depending on which way u turn it.

warning - if u make too much of an adjustment, u risk damaging the gears inside it.

if u need to make large adjustments, u need to use VCDS to put the headlights in "learning mode", make the changes, then save the new position.

You´re right. But I was only focused on suspension system… ;)

How do you know if you’ve adjusted too much or too little?

For example if I park 7meters away, do I mark the top of the light beam, then adjust the lights so it’s higher but by how much, 5cm 10cm? That’s the bit I’m confused at 😞

Essentially, at 7m away, the top of the low beam shining on the wall should be at or slightly below the height of the center of the headlight projector lens.
hence u need to measure:-
1. centre of project lens to the ground

2. top of low beam cut-off to the ground.

#2 should not exceed #1.

ideally, #2 should b between 2-5cms lower than #1.

obviously the ground must b level/flat.
