Bearing or diff

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone help me with my2016 superb 4x4 ....

Hearing a burring noise when I accelerate after 30 gets noisier at 50 and eases off at 70 , is it a bearing or could it be my diff

Or the prop shaft coupling?     So has your Haldex been serviced properly at least twice? Not just oil changes.  ? How many miles has your car done?

A guess, serviced recently by someone undiscerning to whom one hole is as good as another! 🤣

Am I wrong?

If 2016, a mk3 Superb.

Everything on the car is running spot on , accelerating no vibrating, gear box in for second service , that's all I know right now , not using oil and tyres are spot on

145000

I had that on a completely different VW Group car, a VW Passat 4Motion 2000, which like the earlier MK1 Superb were just some old Audi bits as far as the drive train was concerned, so being a pessimist, I thought "gearbox/diff" so handed it in after swopping wheels around, with a very heavy heart, the noise that car made, and started making quite quickly from being very quiet, was more of a wah wah like older army trucks with off road (mainly) tyres, luckily it was only a front wheel bearing so I got both sides replaced, noises gone, I never ever tried driving through that noise, I just used it as little as possible until I could get it "seen to", mileage at that time was probably near 75K miles/9years old.

My wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, started making "bearing noises" when it was only over 6 years old and 30/35K miles, as I initially hoped it was uneven tyre wear, but when it came time to change from directional winter tyres to summer tyres the noise unfortunately did not go away!  I did keep running it and yes, I could easily drive through that noisy band of road speed, it was just a hum that could easily be "got rid of" by turning the radio on and up a bit, I replaced both front bearing assembles and that sorted that out.

Edit:- that can be the reality of running a 4WD car, always start with the worst possible source of the noise, I've only ever had, as my car, a 4WD car for the past 30 years and never yet had any "4WD" related issues.

Rum4mo thank you for all this info , hope I can find the fault

Take it to a specialist; could be loads of things.

@Bobbymahon Did you ever get to the bottom of your noise issue?

Thanks.

Yes andy, 1 mechanic told me it was my diff , went to another for second opinion and was told bearing , all sorted and quiet as a mouse now

Sorry it was the bearing

@BobbymahonSo was that a rear wheel (hub)  bearing?

Oh of course it was going to be a £1,500 part, but then it was…

….n’t! 🙄 Still so many dodgy so-called mechanics around, ready to rip people off.

@Bobbymahon

Thanks, it does sound similar to my issue. I recently spent way too much money on Mk3 Scout with just over 70K on the clock. It was purchased from a used car dealer and delivered to me from 200 miles away. I didn't notice the noise a small test drive but did when I was driving on my lonesome a day later on a quiet road. Dealer didn't really believe me but was happy for me to have it investigated. My friends garage changed the NSR wheel bearing thinking that would cure it but to no avail, I then took it Skoda and they said further investigation required and couldn't look again for months but confirmed "noise above 40mph on overrun". I eventually asked to return the car fearing the worse but the dealer agreed try to fix the issue so with a lot of faffing I got the car back to him and his "mechanic"  determined it was nothing to worry about and just the noise of the car which I don't really believe. So in all I've wasted a lot of time and money and am none the wiser. Car is lovely to drive with the music turned up.

As @toot asked, was that a wheel bearing, if so I might change the other side! :)

Andy , my car has 150000 on it when it started ,mechanic sorted it and told me was the back bearing  but it sounded like it was coming from front

Sounds like he fixed you and not the car, why did you accept it back?

But for the fact your car is a 4x4 Scout I would not be concerned

Have you had anyone check whether a Haldex oil change has been carried out and the diff oil drained by mistake?

When these differentials go bang, nearly always after a garage has drained the diff oil by mistake and denys it, it costs £3-4K for replacement if you are not capable of DIY, you should never be fobbed off with accepting rear differential noise during the period where you can reject the vehicle.

@J.R. Basically he only offered most of the money back and I had a trip planed in the car. I do feel stupid now as it does seem diff based.

I asked Skoda to service / inspect the Haldex. They did, well they changed the oil.

I’m going to take it to a transmission specialist and try to get to bottom of this - I have a warranty of sorts. The noise isn’t loud but I know it’s there.

Thanks.

@Bobbymahonmy noise is definitely from the rear. Where are you based?

Thanks.

Also @J.R. apparently the diff oil has been checked but this is from dealer so…

If there were no oil it would have expired by now, maybe it was run for a while before they realised and before serious damage was done like I did, yes I also made the mistake.

I have transmission noise (none before the event) and have driven 40K miles since flushing and filling with oil and it has not got any worse so its not all doom and gloom.

So a garage messed up a service and then denied it? Who do you use now, a indie VAG specialist or main dealer.

I feel your pain, you still love your car though?

@Bobbymahonalso the noise is audible from around 40 mph upwards.
