Heated screen performance?

Featured Replies

Sorry, windscreens again...

If anyone else has a heated screen, would you please share how long it takes to melt a frosting please?  I never needed to use it before my windscreen got broken, and now it's finally frosty it seems to be the blower and heat from the engine that's doing the job rather than the screen itself.  Yes, it's turned on according to the light on the centre button.

Thank you.

It really depends. Thick ice will take up to 5 minutes or more, some mist wil be gone in 20 seconds.

It`s not as fast as the version with wired elements as on older Skodas.

My previous and current Kodiaq clear the screen as good as or better than my previous Yeti with the visible wires in the screen.

I usually start car turn on front, back heated screen, and mirrors and by the time I’ve scraped the side windows rest are clear or clear enough to use wipers so would say about 3-4 mins at most.

Will take a bit longer than 3 minutes.

We do get snow here too :)

Ok, thanks for the input.  Managed a proper test this morning (i.e. without needing to rush off).  -4 with a good covering of frost to defrosted in a little over 5 minutes with just the heated screen and all other ventilation off.  In the ballpark then.  I did notice thawing started at the top corners and worked toward the bottom centre, leaving the mottled areas near the rearview still iced.

That looks brutal :)

Mine is “Fast Enough”.

Start engine.

Switch on all HOT buttons.

Heater temp up high with fan up high too.

Squeegee outside windows, with or without de-icer spray.

Drive away.

What’s not to like!

Guess why I ticked the boxes for useful Extras on my next Kodiaq instead of £1,000+ Red Velvet paint - much as I liked it last time 🙂

It's most useful in weather when it rains freezing water that blocks visibility. After minute ice is gone on highway speeds.. For removing snow or ice before start I use pre heating (webasto). Never needed windscreen heater for that.

We don't get the option of selecting that in the UK - it's illegal to leave your engine running unnecessarily (i.e. when you're not actually driving the car) over here. We also don't have enough severely cold weather (except maybe in the very north of Scotland) to warrant it... but then you could argue we don't have enough sun to warrant sunroofs either 😂.

Okay  you don't have pre heater option there.. Of course its better than nothing to get ice or mist off you screen but not very powerful IMO. For sunroof you definetly need rainsensors to close it automatically :D

What about aftermarket Webasto? Is this also not allowed?

I kept my car in the heated garage and saw no need for Webasto until I bought a country house. Had it installed later. Cost of course about 2,5 times more than factory option, but unreplaceable thing in our climate.

It’s not the heater that is not allowed - you’re just not allowed to leave the car engine running while not driving it. Which makes it pointless.

Anyway, think someone wanted to prove me wrong about the weather round here… we’re now up to about 6-8 inches, which is unheard of in these parts!

If parked on a driveway / off street at home then an extension lead suitable for outdoors and a greehouse heater in the vehicle does the job.

A wind Deflector helps for the lead going in the window.

Just set the heater to above 0*oC for clear glass inside and out.    Remember to remove before driving off.

Your reply should have been qualified by 'on a public road'. On private land ( driveway ) you can do as you please. However if someone were to drive off in your car, your insurer might have something to say about that. :D

Vorsprung Durch Technik.   No way!

As a long term user of the Ford system I concur that it clears well and quickly and for me the wires were never a problem.  The downside is how long the elements last IMHO.  I tend to keep my cars for longer than 3 years, and I don't think I've ever had a ford screen that wasn't at least starting to see failure of the wire elements at the 3 year mark.  i.e. just at the end of warranty.  I wonder how the VAG system will last?

I have done a VCDS modification, which allows to lock the car from the remote, even when the engine is running.

It will. Dont know about the modern heating film layer (only have experience since 2019), but my previous Superb, 2014 make and done about 460 000 km, works flawlessly for my friend, who owns it now.

Still, wired heating, as on Superb, is more efficient, than the film layer option.

In other words the keys don't have to be inside the car for the engine to run?  So someone smashes a window and can drive off with your car without you even knowing about it.

I reckon you're insurer isn't going to take too kindly to that either.

Here's an idea...  what about getting in to the driver seat, switching on the engine and waiting until the car warms up? Or do as I do. Had heated windscreens in Fords but never found them of any use. By the time I clear the passenger side + rear 3/4 windows on my Kodiaq, the non-heated windscreen has defrosted.

Hopefully like the ones stolen this week the thieves take the ones that are running with keys presents rather than smash glass and set off the alarm and drive off without a key present.

Maybe they can just drive off with the courier vehicles sitting with their engines running while the drivers are delivering.  Plenty of those about.

And, if round here is anything to go by, none are worth stealing - except that at the start of a round the contents of the packages are probably worth more than the car itself.

Round here they can be EV vans that cost more than a Kodiaq sitting unlocked, but if they can be driven away if the key is inside is for the toe rags to try.

This Infiniti Q30 was probably not worth recovering. Other than it is required for earning their living.

Interesting, I might have a look at this.  Is there any moire information you could share please?  Have ODB11 rather than VCDS but I'm sure that's not a showstopper.
