Software Updates Post Warranty Expiration

Featured Replies

Hi All 👋

Does anyone know what the scenario would be when warranty expires in relation to software updates (infotainment), so far all software updates have been covered under warranty but no idea what the scenario would be when this expires...would dealers charge for this ? I think thats a given tbh...can car go outside of the dealer network for any software updates????

In theory for the main infotainment software 1896, all the updates after *should* be OTA (or a version close to this.)  Other radio firmwares again are trying to go OTA also, for other Infotainment systems.

As for charging, time = money, and main dealers will change (unless some push from VAG - unlikely)

Independent workshops will be able to flash all of the car's control modules and do all the same work as a main dealer, the exception being is they don't have easy access at all to infotainment updates, they *might* be able to order a USB stick from TPS, or they might have a friendly main dealer who will supply the files needed (again unlikely)

Bottom line, dealers have access to infotainment updates, independent workshops, usually no.

You best buy an extended warranty from Skoda / VW, or start a campaign online / on social media to have VW Group / Skoda UK giving an extended warranty free gratis on something they have had several years now to get to grip with snagging faults but they have failed badly with.

Might be worth also looking at the all-in-one

You get a major and minor service, 2 MOTs, 2 years breakdown cover and 2 years warranty cover for not much more than cost of the services (so warranty is virtually free)

There has been couple of months where there was 20% off, but hasn’t been discounted since last summer.  Perhaps the discounted price was too good to be true.

Just remembered, the assistance and warranty also covers travel to Europe which might be useful if you go abroad and something fails

There is an issue with Skoda / VW warranties, well from the company VW owns that sells them.

Known faults, and there are known faults.  Who knows them are VW Group because they keep trying to fix them.

Well Audi and VW ones first and then they produce Skoda ^ Seat still with faults and flog those.

I am on SW 1896 and since having a new Onboard Communications Unit fitted 6 weeks ago my Infotainment System is, at last, stable. As my 3 yr warranty expires in September, how can I be sure that I am now receiving ‘Over The Air’ software updates.

Thanks

It might be a few more week's/month's before there's an update.

SEAT are on 1898, and VW I'm not sure, just the software is shared across the brand's, with adjustments made for each brand of course (boot logo's and such)

Thanks, is it the case then that I will receive an update notification on the Infotainment at Start Up if and when an OTA Update becomes available? This is what used to happen but has not happened for several months now.

It could drop anytime, or maybe they also release in small batches here and there.

I do keep and eye on releases, but not seen Skoda update for 1896 to xxxx version.

Over on the German O4 forum, 4tz3nhainer states :"My current status is that 1899 is the latest version for the old hardware H56. 1898 is the latest version for the new hardware H58."

I have no idea if this is correct or not but a number of people seem to have one or the other of these releases.

I am on Hardware H56 and Software 1896. Would be interested to know if anyone in UK has exceeded these number ?

I know of some users in Poland, that have 1898 in NEW cars, collected during autumn. That would be H56.

Don't know however anyone with 1899. Also don't know anyone that would receive major OTA, just some small ones.

But actually those small OTA's might still bring some changes. I have received one of those few weeks ago, and recently it occured to me, that since that time i haven't had a single SOS module issue (no "pop pop" and no disconnections), so i assume it was related.

So it appears that 1896 may well be the latest UK Software and H56 the latest UK Hardware. Does any UK owner out there know different?

Sorry, that was my bad. Those new cars with 1898 are H58.

H56 are still on 1896 and no OTA.

That's very unlikely. You will get 1898/1899 sooner or later. Also am pretty sure new cars in UK are also on H58.

Please confirm - Are you saying that cars such as mine with H56 and SW 1896 can no longer receive OTA software updates despite being able to receive small SW updates OTA prior to 1896?

Thanks

No, that's not what i mean.

I meant, that there was no OTA with major update so far, at least i haven't heard of it. If you want to update from 1896 to 1898 you need to visit dealership.

In theory it's possible to have OTA, but for some reason they are not releasing it. There are rumors, that soon they will start the OTA process, but those are just rumors.

I also got the 10" Columbus infotainment system replaced under warranty. It arrived with SW 1668 and now they are unable to install the upgrade to SW 1896. Do you know the SW version that came with your new unit? Did you have any issues upgrading the SW on the new unit?

Not sure which update they tried to actually apply, as you cannot go directly from 1668 to 1896.

It has to be done in two stages, so you have to load this release "SK20220307SEQSW96" (they will know, or they should know!)

To read the blocked train version, take the value seen and add 1 in front to read the MUVersion, so "MOI3_EU_SK_R7880L" = "MUVersion 1788"

First is this version: -

I had the OCU (Onboard Communications Unit) replaced - this is what connects the Car to the Skoda servers to provide the data for licensed features every time the car is switched on. It thereby give's functionality to  SOS, Navigation, Users profiles etc.

I may be wrong but I believe the ‘Head’ unit is the 10” display screen under the driver’s mirror. I did not have this replaced.

My car retained all updates up to and including 1896 but still had all the start up server issues including Pop Pop SOS.  Once the OCU was replaced my system became stable and has remained so.

So the issue for my car was not the Head Unit but the OCU which sits behind the drivers display in front of the steering wheel.

@varooom
So is there a way to upgrade from this to 1941?
Does it have to be through a dealer, or can i do it myself?
If so any idea where can i get the software files.

Hmm I think the version gap is too big in his case.

Hi - I am on SW 1896 and had the OCU replaced a year ago. Like many I am experiencing restarts especially within the first miles of a journey.

I phoned the dealer for a warranty checkover of the infotainment. The service manager rang back to say that a big OTA update is out currently. Skoda, he says, are rolling it out over time and some may not get it until October. He said to check to see if I am receiving OTA updates by checking in settings in  Infotainment.  He said to get back to him if it remains troublesome. I checked and I have no record of any OTA updates having been received. I have not had a live notification of an update for as long as I can remember.

I am booked in for my first MOT on Thursday and my 3yr warranty expires a few weeks later.  So I have 2 questions for any kind person out there in the know:

1. How can I check to see any OTA updates previously installed?

2. I have a Green SOS indicator - does this mean that  I receive OTA updates?

Thanks

You can receive OTAs as long as your car has a white globe icon.

Previous OTAs does not change the system SW versions and I'm afraid there is no way to see the update history.

I aven't read a word about an incoming "big OTA" yet here or in the german community so I'm not shure if this was

a legit statement. And even if it is - you can't be shure that skoda will stick to that "until october" roadmap.

Many of us just updated their cars themself via USB method.

Everything you need for this is documented in the "restart endlessly" thread here.
