1.2 TSI engine help (cam chain)

Featured Replies

Hi all - I'm looking at buying an (April) 2015 Rapid Spaceback SE Sport. It has done 80k miles, and the garage has changed the timing chain. I have seen issues with early 1.2TSI engines involving the chain, but it's not clear whether/when upgrades were made to later engines that still had the chain.

A paid for online check says the car I'm looking to buy has the CBZB EA111 engine, which is supposed to have 8 valves, but Autotrader's check reckons it's got 16?

So:

- do I need to worry about any chain issues with a 2015 example?

- is there any chance the car in question has a 16v version of the CBZB engine?

Thanks in advance

As you can see in the chart below, CBZB is an 8 valve SOHC engine which has a chain driven camshaft. The later 1.2TSI 16v DOHC engines have belt driven camshafts.

If it's the car on Autotrader on 79k miles in Hampshire (grey) then that's definitely shows as a 1.2TSi (105) so 16v.

Up to 2013 models with this engine have had reported chain wear/noise issues, after that i believe some improvement was made.

I have a Toledo, same engine bought new 2014 with the 16v engine. It has 32k miles on it now and runs sweet. I've found regular oil changes (Castrol Edge 5w 30 LL) is keeping things well lubed re the chain.

Also starting from cold immediately can produce a slightly prelonged chain rattle on start up. What I do is turn on the ignition and wait about 5 secs then turn the key, no rattle, correct me if I'm wrong but must be the oil getting to the top of the engine on start up, less rattle. Works for me anyway. I say regular oil changes, I do both my cars at around 5k miles approx, I'm a bit too keen on stuff like this but at around £38 per oil/filter change it's the peace of mind to keep the engine running smoothly.👍

Cheers Mick! Yeah that's the exact one, confusing right? The engine is a CBZB and there's no where online that suggests it was ever upgraded to a 16v?

Cheers for the advice re: the chain, from looking at forums that seems to be the best advice, regular oil changes etc and the odd dose of 98RON petrol - up until now the car has had regular oil changes by Skoda so it has been looked after.

It also seems like the real chain issues were pre 2011/2012 from what I've read so my mind is fairly at ease 🙏🏻

@rapidlyfNo sellers of 98 ron in the UK, so it would be 97 or 99 ron.   But it is E5 if you think that makes any difference t the longevity.

Personally i would prefer that 5w 40 FS so VW 502 00 was being used, fixed service intervals  rather than long life oil that Skoda Main Dealers might have used.

The timing chains were the early ones and then there was an upgrade kit to fit.

But now near 10 year old ones can be getting noisy.  So at least a 2015 is a bit newer.

Yeah I just meant super unleaded basically ( higher than 95).

But yeah 7 years old shouldn't be bad really, seemed spot on on the test drive too

What is the service record showing, spark plugs changed at least twice, or recently, air filter, pollen filter, brake fluid?

Main Dealer Servicing with stuff paid for and done, not just Oil & Filter & inspections.
