Still new to these

Featured Replies

So I joined a long while ago and forgot,

I also pretty much forgot to look after the car with everything going on in my life so decided now is the time to get her back up to a good condition

I brought the car as a £1000 beater to commute whilst my other cars perpetually destroy themselves,

in that time I have seen the prices rise and have really enjoyed the car so time to look after it.

trouble is I have no clue about anything to do with these things, if it was a cosworth or a rotary no problem but this is all new to me,

revently cleaned up the interior a bit as it was looking proper tatty,

main issue (other than repeated new rear calipers) has been a amber traction / abs type light that comes on after a bit of driving that I cannot clear and just got a oil leak somewhere around the top end / boost pipes,

are these a common problem / fix.

also need to focus on the inter cooler / boost pipe work as it looks like it’s being held there with hopes and prayers.

Don’t know if it’s worth putting the time in on a 230k car but she seems to be running sweet so May as well do some quick cheap fixes to keep it that way

It has both ABS and a switchable traction control. So you need to describe the light. The most likely issue is one of the FOUR (4) ABS sensors being a bit crook, but you need a good fault reader (VCDS or OBD11 for preference) to identify which sensor the fault is with.

That makes sense thank you, I will have to see if my generic code reader can pick it up or not.

I couldn’t believe the weight of the seat backs on these! I’m used to 90s sh*tboxes that are made out of recycled foam and tins.

I have just been looking through some of the stuff I was told about the car when I got it,

man’s this is some of the oil that’s blowing all over the shop

I think for the minimal mods it has it is pretty much at the peak of what it can do, he did say I could get a stage 2 map but after that I would need more.

is it worth pushing any further on a 230k mile engine

For the ABS stuff, check all four tyres are same size.

If it's an ASR warning light  and it comes on after 10 mins driving, easy problem to solve involving a broken wire or two.

The next problem is I just had the brakes done for the MOT the rear calipers failed AGAIN, was only replaced last year.

went to replace the fronts but they are not the ones I was told,

was told they were off a golf gti with the 312mm set up but the offset was wrong.

since been told they are more than likely Audi TT 225 / Octavia VRS 312mm

is there a certain type people use that will narrow my choices down as I can’t keep buying and returning.

OK, do they have any text cast into them? Probably DS3 (for 288 or 312mm discs) or possibly FSIII (almost certainly 280mm discs).

FSIIIs won't be on a Fabia vRS, because on mk1 Fabias those are only used with 256mm discs.

They don’t unfortunately, they are definitely 312mm as the previous owner got a kit and I measured them it’s just the offset which is different,

he thought they came off a good gti or a Octavia vrs but now he is thinking maybe they came off the TT225

No.

Any noughties 2wd Golf platform car that has 312's should fit but nothing with 4wd.

It's an ATE 310mm/312mm front brake system, ie. ATE front brake calipers and carriers.

ATE have replaced the old 312mm front discs for new and improved 310mm front discs, and no longer sell the old 312mm discs. The old 312mm discs had a minimum wear thickness of 23mm, but the new 310mm have a new and improved wear thickness of 22mm, ie. the new ones will last 50% longer.

As you can see below, there are at least two different designs of ATE front brake calipers for the 288mm and 310mm/312mm front brake discs.

Much appreciated, thankyou.

I have neglected the car with my work schedule and want to get it back to top notch.

and tighten everything up a bit

Yeah, just don't try and fix anything that ain't broke.

On a 230k engine that's running well, best advice is to leave well alone and just service it on schedule.

If and only if the new discs are 50% thicker than the old ones, which you don't state except by implication.

I understand that, my plan was to get it all up to a good condition and just do the normal bolt on things and flash maps knowing that it’s on borrowed time,

it doesn’t bother me if it blows up tomorrow as I will just go pick up a engine or another car and transfer the bits over as I enjoy the platform and will be sticking with something PD based for a while,

it’s a second car to get me to work and back but I still want it to make me smile a bit,

I will have to take a closer look and do a better measure up. Thank you

If it helps, getting from 288mm to 312mm discs just needs new caliper carriers, discs and pads. You'd certainly need new calipers to fit the 310mm discs AFAIK.

Rear calipers, check the handbrake return levers. "Helper" springs can help... Penalty is a stiffer handbrake. "Not green" calipers are available in pairs for £80-ish on eBay as opposed to green ones or red ones.

Just in case.... 312 replacements need to be 5x100 PCD.

we managed to fit the new rears no problem, they are still stock sized,

the front have been a issue because they had fitted a bigger brake set up before it came to me.

I think my mechanic may have ordered the 4 wheel drive brakes accidentally after what everyone has been saying

So started noticing a bit of smoke on startup and my entire engine bay covered in oil,

a little I can understand but this seems to be a lot.

the filter is dry but the pipes have oil in them, I understand a little is normal but how much is too much?

my turbo has always been a bit whistly but I am starting to think we may have a problem

I would say you do have a problem.
