All Season Tyres for Citigo

Featured Replies

Hello Citigo hive mind! The tyres on my Citigo need replacing and I want to fit all season tyres. My current favourite is Hankook Kinergy 4S2 due to a combination of price, good reviews and my own recent good experience with Hankook tyres. My car takes 185/55R15 tyres

My question is who has fitted all season tyres to a Citigo and how have you found them? Please give details of tyre/model/size and miles covered.

You don't say if you're wheels are 14"/15"/16", etc., but if you have 14" then Vredestein Quatrac 5 are still available. The 15" and 16" have now gone over to the Vredestein Quatrac 6 (actually just Vredestein Quatrac without a number) but some sellers use the 6 to show that's it's a newer version. Unfortunately, the latest Quatrac is now a directional tyre, so a spare wheel for example, can only be correctly fitted to the left or right side of the car, depending which way the tyre has been fitted to the rim.

The Vredestein Quatrac 5 will last much longer than the Hankook all-season tyres. Possibly around 40,000 miles. The Vredestein Quatracs are also one of the best performing all-season tyres in cold rain, ie. between 0 degrees Centigrade and 9 degrees Centigrade...outperforming even the Michelin CrossClimates in cold rain/wet road conditions.

The 165/70R14 and 175/65R14 are standard tyre sizes on the Citigo, but 185/65R14 will also fit the 5Jx14 ET35 rims. Compared to the two standard 14" sizes, 185/65R14 not only gives more grip but a more comfortable ride. 185/65R14 has about the same outside diameter as a 185/50R16 tyre, which is another standard tyre size on the Citigo...so no problems with the speedometer reading.

Blackcircles are also listing these three tyres, although at a slightly higher cost.

The tyre size is 185/55R15 given its a Monte Carlo.

I had considered VREDESTEIN but they are more expensive than the Hankooks and do not fare as well in the tyre tests I've read. (Catskill do not list them in my size) You say these will last longer than the Hankooks, on what basis are you making that statement? My experience of Hankook shows they last quite well. TBH Longevity is not high on my priorities as the car only does 2-3K miles a year.

Have you run Quatracs on your Citigo? How do they go?

PS Thanks for the Catskill links, Hankooks are £20 cheaper there, although would need them fitted.

Vredestein are often cheaper than Hankook all-season tyres, but 185/55R15 is an expensive size.

Some Monte Carlos run on 14" tyres, because that's what the owner has changed them to.

Citigos that left the factory with tyres bigger than 14" were fitted with stiffer front and rear springs, hence some owners find that the combination of the low profile tyres and the stiffer springs makes the ride too hard.

As you can see in the charts below, the stiffer springs use a 0.25mm thicker wire diameter.

Standard ride height soft springs (for Citigos that left the factory with 14" wheels)

Front wire diameter 11.00mm

Rear wire diameter 9.25mm

Standard ride height hard springs (for Citigos that left the factory with 15"/16" wheels)

Front wire diameter 11.25mm

Rear wire diameter 9.5mm

Surprisingly, Citigos that left the factory with lowered/sports suspension had shortened soft springs, rather than shortened hard springs. Compared to the standard ride height soft springs, lowered/sports front springs are 20mm shorter and lowered/sports rear springs are 15mm shorter.

Skoda Citigo 85 SE 2018 with 175 65 14 Vredestein Quatrac 4 on.

Now on the car for the second winter season as I run Conti's in the summer.

Car does 10K+ miles per year with the all season on for less than 5K miles PA.

No problem with them. Would recommend them if you asked me.

I also run a Fiat Panda  JTD 2009 with them on since 2016. Also no problem.

Ran Dunlop winters from 2010 until 2016. Car owned from new and now at 133K miles.

If the Hankook's work for you then stick with them.

I only fit Asymmetrical tyres to my cars for various reasons.

I am further South than you. North Dorset, Rural area.

Thanks. AG Falco

Our Citigo has  Goodyear 165/70 R14 (81) T VECTOR 4 SEASON G2 on it, we got them at Costco for less than £60.00 per corner, fully fitted.

After 2500 miles we have had no problems  with them.

Thanks for the information, currently showing as £86.89 a corner at Costco, in my car's size. (your car is £30 a tyre cheaper!) I find the Goodyears do well in the tyre tests and were a contender on performance, so price is a factor now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Running 175/65R14  Goodyear Vector 4-season gen2.

I bought them cheap from blackcircles and had them delivered just before the pandemic started, as my old tyres didn't have much life left

I then had to work from home and consequently hardly did any mileage and the old tyres carried on for a lot longer.

It must have been about 2 years ago that I got around to fitting them and have done maybe 10k since then.

Just checked for you and fronts are on 7mm, rears 8mm. I think they'll outlast the car!

Very useful @fatbelly. How are they managing in the current snowy conditions?

The only problems I have had with the Vredestein tyres in the snow / ice / cold is:-

Got to work one day and exited the car then fell straight over on the ice. 😒

Being told:  'If I can't drive my £60k 4x4 up this hill then there is no way your Citigo will get up there.' 😁

Being followed by other cars with them thinking they can drive as fast as me.

1 Range Rover went up the bank to the side of the road.

1 Honda Civic went through a metal fence.

You need to make allowances for your ability to stop quicker than any following car.

Did drive down one road where the snow was so deep that the front wheels were lifted off the ground.

Just turned the steering and reversed out.

Thanks. AG Falco

off not of . spelling.

I fitted Michelin Cross Climate to our family SEAT Mii (185/55/15).

Also ran Cross Climates on a few Yeti's and found them to be quiet, excellent in winter conditions and very long lasting.

Prior to 'discovering' All-season tyres I'd typically switched between full winters (on steel rims) and the cars original alloys.

Recall the Michelins weren't the cheapest option, but given both relative performance and longevity can recommend them👍

+ Another 1 for Goodyear's. Got my Dad Ultragrip 9s for one Citigo and the the Vector 4 Season Gen2s for the other. Both lasted well for about three/four years until both cars were sold in January still with decent tread. Both used 14".

I'm just rounding out this thread by saying I eventually got Hankook 4S2 fitted. No dealer / online supplier could get me 4 Hankooks, the best any could do was 3. These were obviously the only three in the country in my size. I did cast about a bit for alternatives and came close to getting Bridgestone WeatherControls as I had these on my previous big car (Karoq) and found them to be very good. The Bridgestones were a good price from Costco, but logistics / life got in the way of me getting to Costco for a few weeks. I got fed up and asked local fitter to check for Hankook availability again, hey presto plenty of stock but in a warehouse somewhere, so Hankook must have imported a load.

I've just had them fitted this morning and they look good on, not quite as fat as the Bridgestone Ecopia they replace but actually seem to sit on the rim better. A few miles show very little in handling differences (once I set the tyre pressures correctly!) so happy with my choice so far. I'm expecting a bit of hit in fuel consumption, but that is not significant given the mileage this little car does. Winter is a long way off yet to really test them but I'm happy to have replaced the disintegrating tyres.

Use Goodyear ultragrip 9+ on our Arona (obviously not in mid summer), and after 3 winters (and about 18k miles) still got well over 6mm of tread on all 4.  Brilliant tyres in cold rain, frost, and good in snow too (got me around a big jam on A46 and M5 via some untreated snow covered hilly roads through Cotswolds).

A little update.

As a second car there is not many miles go the Citigo, so the tyres are still new. In the 200 miles they have done, a lot has been in the wet. the tyres are confidence inspiring so far. One surprising thing, the amount of water thrown up / sucked onto the rear screen seems to be less with these tyres than the OEM Bridgestone tyres. The only reason I can think of is the arrowhead directional tread is putting more water out the sides rather than out the back in a rooster tail.

I've tried a few different all season tyres over the years:-

I've long been a fan of Michelin Crossclimate all season tyres and have had a few sets on my mkII Superb. I had a long/nasty commute for nearly 3 decades  that was prone to dodgy winter weather so latterly I'd had two sets of wheels shod with summer or winter tyres until discovered the Crossclimates which were good in most conditions but fabulous in very wet conditions which to be honest was my biggest issue! I'd tried a set of Quatrac 5's on my previous Superb that were generally ok but not great in very wet conditions.

Recently I've also flirted with Goodyear Vector tyres but this time on Mrs BJ's Fiat Panda Elaganza as Crossclimates were not available and to be honest I'm impressed thus far. It's hard to compare with my Superb but my goodness that little car really sticks to the road negotiating roundabouts etc. Winter driving was good but they haven't experienced deep snow yet - however initial impressions are good.

NB Tyre Life:-

  • The Quatrac 5's on my Superb I were amazing re tyre life - I sold my car with these still fitted but the new owner achieved over 60k miles on them! The original fitment Brigestones only lasted 18k miles!
  • The Michelin Crossclimate tyres are lasting circa 35k miles a set which is great but note as new they only have have 7mm of tread
  • The Goodyear Vector tyres had nearly 9mm new - time will tell.

Is this not a Citigo part of the forum? The Superb has completely different wheels, tyre sizes and suspension, so there's no real comparison.

Agreed in a way but I was only trying to pass on my real life experience with numerous all season tyres. I did a high mileage horrible commute over many years (3 decades) so I tried various tyres to keep me alive.  I suspect performance in the cold & wet is relevant for any model of car which is why all seasons are now fitted to Mrs BJs Panda which is a similar size to the Citigo.

PS in the winter months the worst tyre was the Michelin Energy - never again, er on any car.

Apologies for gate crashing the Citigo part of the forum.

No worries, but different sizes, speed ratings and max loads can mean different characteristics for tyres of apparently the same 'name'.

I'm taking delivery of a 19 plate Citigo SEL soon. From the pics it looks like it's fitted with 185/55/R15 tyres at present. Slightly annoying as these appear to be almost double the price of the 14" variants!  Anyone running 4 season on this size or 15" variant of and can recommend a particular tyre. I was looking at Hankook's but in 15" they're  over £90 a corner.

Anyhow, will probably just have to take it on the chin but thought it was worth asking.

thanks.

That is the size fitted to our CITIGO Monte Carlo. (see the original post on this thread) I fitted Hankooks and they feel very solid in the wet. They were fitted end of June, so no cold weather experience yet. Yes, its an expensive size.

The Hankooks are a good price on there. Depends on cost of fitting locally of course. Mine were £85 each fitted IIRC.

My Mii has 185/55/15 and after the original tyres wore out I opted for a complete set of Michelin Cross Climate.

Admittedly not the cheapest option, but based upon past experience excellent longevity and decent in all weathers.

Different size, but detailed review: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2022-Tyre-Reviews-All-Season-Tyre-Test.htm

Just got qty 4 Michelin 175/65HR14 CrossClimate+ XL for an all-in £372.90 from ATS with 60Club discount.

That includes nitrogen (for better TPS monitoring), balance, insurance (MasterService), etc.

So quiet - very noticeable.

Awaiting my free Bugatti Bolide now (OK - it's a Lego)!
