1.5 TSI idle and ACT

Featured Replies

Hi

I have another thread on the forum regarding vibrations from the ACT-system (which I first thought was a suspension problem).

I’ve now been back and forth with the dealership to try and fix the problem, but sadly the answers has been “It’s just how the car is”.

My Scala has just been at the workshop and I asked them if it’s normal, that the engine has these small “hickups” at idle when the engine is warm, where they replied “It’s the ACT you can feel.”

My question is; does ACT really activate during idle? And are these small “hickups” normal at idle?

(These “hickups” doesn’t affect the revs, but can clearly be felt through the steering wheel and the seats)

The 1.4TSI has had many software fixes for rough idle, not sure if the issue with 1.5TSI has been ironed out.

What kind of grade fuel are you putting into the tank?

If I have read this correctly, then YES at idle and low loading the ACT (COD) will be active in shutting down 2x cylinders.

I run E10 95 octane. I’ve tried E5 100 octane a couple of times, but seems about the same.

It says “approx 1330 - 3200 rpm”, but it idles at 700 rpm. So unless it doesn’t have to meet all these requirements, then yes, it seems that it activates.

Recommend if you can post up how many Km driven so far, and what history of the car in terms of last time spark plugs were changed.  Maybe there is a software update for engine, but unless you have tools to read in current version I cannot tell you if there is any update.

Maybe someone has the same engine as you and can comment if they had same, and how they fixed it.

The 1.5 tsi does not have COD. Is the engine vibrating all the time or just  when ACT is activated (eco) on dash. ACT only activates when driving so they cannot say its how it is. Go to another Dealer or reject the car. I have the 1.5 tsi and I cannot tell it running even when it changes to eco. I only use Shell fuel

COD is just what Audi call it, and ACT is what Skoda and VW call it for the same engine.

Maybe wrong on terms, but here is the ACT document.

EDIT: So in theory then according to this, at idle it appears all 4 cylinders should be active, which seems like fuel wasting.

Additional Information

I'd suggest that the reason COD/ACT should not be activated at idle speed is because the resulting engine vibration would be unacceptable - perhaps incorrect activation is exactly the cause of OPs complaint.

The car is brand new from 2022 mid december and has driven 4100 km.

It has been to the workshop 4-5 times with a fault in the ABS-sensor which resulted in multiple error messages, a front shock absorber that rubbed against another part(they replaced the shock absorber completly), squealing front brakes at low speeds when the car is warm, not cold (which they haven’t fixed yet) and then the problems I’ve metioned in this thread.

Agree absolutely. The only vibration I have felt from the ACT was when I was coasting at 20mph in third and the ACT engaged, absolutely fine until I put my foot down to accelerate uphill and it chugged for a few seconds until the ACT disengaged.

Hi All, days ago when I was cruising at almost idle speed in 3rd I have noticed that for some reason the car goes slightly faster, so I stopped to check the idle RPM and it was around 950rpm. However in other days it just remains normal around 850 or something. Weather conditions and everything was almost the same, oil was hot etc. I've also noticed when I turn the engine off then on it makes itself normal and rpm becomes stable, around 850rpm again. Any idea why this is happening ? What could make the idle rpm to be higher sometimes?

Is it a DSG.  & is the ambient temperature the same all the time you notice it?

In 3rd cruising at almost idle speed in 3rd is that not the ACT doing it,s thing and you are going into 2 cylinder mode?

No point in ACT / COD (Active Cylinder Tecnology / Cylinders on Demand)  if it does nothing and does not use only 2 cylinders when no load on the engine.

Hello, thanks for your comment. No, it's a 6-gear manual. This is not the ACT for sure. I even notice this incidence when the car stands still and in neutral. So following a cold start the rev.is over 1000rpm for a while then it should go down to the "normal" set idle rpm but it isn't and it remains on 900-1000rpm which is slightly higher than it should be - I guess..... Then I turn the engine off and on again and the rev visibly gets lower, about 800-900rpm. But just until the moment when I push the throttle so the rev.goes up and down again but instead staying on the 800-900rpm normal idle it's 900+ again for some reason. I am wondering if my throttle positions sensor does not go back to full zero. If I let the start/stop system (which is annoying for me and I used to turn it off immediately) to start the engine, the rev. also around 900-1000 rpm again. So just the manual on/off normalizes the rev but just for the moment I apply a little throttle. I hope I was understandable..... :) I am about to make a short video of this issue to make it more visible. And still looking for solutions or confirmation that it's normal and another Scala users have the same thing (which may not be an issue but a normal behaviour). Thanks in advance!

At idle engine stops. If its start / stop system works..

yeah i can monitored it on display, every now and then it works in 2-Cylinder mode..

when i drive steady, same rpms, no much throttle, etc.
