Firewall and cable fastenings

Featured Replies

Hi all,

This one is for thos who know where to get all the tiny bits that SKODA want to charge a fortune for or can't or won't even bother to order.

During my recent engine overhaul on my 2011 Octavia VRS, the garage pulled down the firewall, apparently in an effort to replace the heater. They should have know it is best done from inside the car removing the left side tunnel trim.

However, the firewall is hanging down, they don't know where all the clips are or how it is fixed up. SKODA told me I would need to bring the car in because it would need the engine removing to fix the firewall material up. I can't get to grips with that idea at all since I can reach it with my hand and its not completely off as in all the way down to the tunnel, its just the top part that secures it up to the bulkhead where it meets another kind of material which I guess is an acoustic insulation. In the process all my wires are hanging down and when i picked up the car they were resting on the turbo!. Gathered them up in a temporary way but I'd like to fix it all back like factory. No-one knows what the clips are to hold the firewall foil up, and the tree style cable U clips are all gone. This really annoys me that people aren't more concious of what they are doing. Its not like its an old wreck.

So for the experts in body and upholstery, panelling and all that kind of thing, can you identify the following?

clips to hold the firewall foil up

clips to hold the acoustic felt up if needed as well as the above, and;

the cable u clips that press into the holes on the bulkhead to allow wiring to be carried across and not fall on the turbo.

I guess to some this must sound pretty weird that I can't find out what these parts are. Unfortunately, SKODA give some things strange names and I don't know what the items would be called. I did try to help myself. Promise!

Thanks for any help. Its always been good here. Makes Stealers not only look like thieves (£17 for 8 self tapping screws) but also ignorant.

Once the clips have been identified (best guess eyeball I would think, unless someone on here can offer direct experience) try www.skoda-parts.com (based in Czechia, excellent source for parts but carriage can be pricey) or www.aliexpress.com (China, not entirely helpful search engine but cheapest option as long as you don't mind waiting a few weeks for the post).

This is a very interesting pictorial recognition. It helps me a lot. Many Thanks @mikethethinker. You are the research King. If you don't know it, it appears you know where / how to find it. One day I will grow up to be a big boy in upper school, with lots of knowledge. It was at least the second time you have come to my rescue. My SKODA dealer just doesn't think I could be serious that I want the small fasteners and told me if I need them to get them I would have to accept a pack of many of them (maybe up to 100). I do not think this is what SKODA expects do you?

clarification 'bits' changed to 'fasteners'

Does anyone happen to know what are the fasteners or fixings to hold up the firewall and acoustic felt. I cannot see anything that would hold it up. I have a great pictorial from @MikeTheThinker formerly posted by @toot but don't see what would be used here. Perhaps there are fixing holes just out of sight but tell me if this is wrong...SKODA dealer says the engine needs to be removed to fix up the firewall material! This is how my car was left when someone tried to take it down to see how to fit a heater radiator and didn't bother to consult BRISKODA or even some other directions. When the DPF regen starts I have to open my windows because this insecure firewall covering just lets fumes come in the cabin. I can't really tell where these fumes come from. It appears that it is somewhere behind the DPF so its a great place for those fumes to just go into the cabin, but where from do those fumes originate? I can always remember a kind of hot smell of something when the DPF was doing its thing, but never fumes.

If anyone has a line drawing that shows the parts around this bulkhead area that would be great. If you look to the right end of the bulkhead in the video you will see there is a rectangular space where it appears another piece of felt should fit. Not being a total expert at forensics, it appears something was there, by reference to the indentation line, in the same way as it appears something was fastened to the left end, the indentation being the giveaway, but I'm trying to find out what these parts are and how it was all fixed. Have you ever received your car back and found that instead of satisfaction with the job you had done, you are fuming over the work that was unnecessary or unfinished. They even broke the cover for centre console in the left side footwell. I can still fit it back without a visible problem if I can understand how the fixing clips work, which way to align etc. These are the kind of things where Haynes is often not very comprehensive!

After trawling through lots of possible catalogue pages for your bits/fasteners I came across the one linked below which shows the acoustic damping panels in the engine bay (2008 Octy, Europe).  I believe the acoustic damping panel you seek is item 27, although be careful on part numbers as the first two of three listed are for LHD.  There are also three possible fastener items shown - 28, 29 & 30, although I can't tell which are the ones you seek.  Unfortunately there's no part number shown for #29.

What I did note is the part number for the clips that hold the bonnet damping pad on so if these are the same as those for the firewall you have a part number.

I've found skoda-parts.com good for confirming part numbers against items and also good for supply.

Fingers crossed!

I took another look at 7zap just in case.  No part number there but the diagram seems clearer so I beliefe #28 and #29 could be the same thing and #30 could be your phantom clips as there are 8 of them to the panel.

From a quick hunt via Mr Google[tm] it seems these clip nuts have a multitude of applications and are widely available across the VAG range.

More fabulous research @mikethethinker . It really helps me delve deeper. I feel like the bloke that lost all this stuff should find it and put it back. Now I can point him to the items. I'll do some more checking, but knowing the firewall is actually the 'transverse damper' at least has me speaking the same language to the parts people. I love the way a Golf is used in the Octavia diagram. Thanks for all the time you commit to these matters for members like me.
