Keeping and skimming discs when replacing pads. On car, off car?

Featured Replies

Not that they need doing yet, but soon I'll need new brake pads. and then debate over replacing discs or not will rear it's head.

What are people's thoughts on skimming the disks and going through 2 sets of pads before replacing discs?

My rears disks are a bit scored/pitted and it seems like sacrilege to mate new pads to a mucky surface.

I've seen places that will skim with the rotors still mounted to the car, rather than take them off and lathe them.

Is this a worthwhile thing?

I cant work out if it spins up the discs or is just a precision bit of kit that machines them flat.

If spinning up the discs, is it doable with 4WD Haldex vehicles?

Get their price, ask them.  Compare with just fitting the new discs.

I used to have disc skimmed when they were good quality discs, and i have a mate that had an employee that did the skimming.

I would not be wasting my time or theirs with any OE discs from a VW Group / Skoda vehicle.

For my sins I've never replaced a set of discs in the 40 years I've been driving, only ever the pads. Still alive with no brake related incidents to report.

That said, I do intend to change my rear discs & pads in the next month or so, mainly because I can now afford to.

I saw that done on Wheeler Dealers, seemed to give a good result.

Aftermarket discs are dirt cheap they will certainly be a fraction of the cost of skimming even on the vehicle, if you are having to pay labour for the discs to be fitted then that will alter the economics.

I like you will only replace discs when they really need be and I also have a lathe so can skim them but for the price I have paid for the last 3 or 4 sets, barely more than a tenner a disc I dont need the grief and can weigh in the old ones, they command a higher price then general steel scrap.

Without the engine running, I don't think there will be an issue.  At the same time, my experience handbrake turning my Yeti in the snow, suggests that applying the handbrake decouples drive to the rear.

Hand brake, vs e-brake / parking brake / finger brake.

If there were snow on the ground, I might have nipped out in the Karoq to see if it would also perform lovely pirouettes from an application of the electric parking brake...

I'm reminded that when I was but a wee boy, we had a West Highland Terrier that did that.  Grumpy, vicious little devil it was, as well.

In more recent times, I'm reminded that when Bike Magazine first tested the new BMW R1200GS in 2004, they described its handling in the same way.

I didn't believe them at the time and then my wife bought me one from John Clark Motorrad for Christmas that year.  The Bike journalist was quite correct;

that's exactly how it felt.  I spent the next three years riding around with too much preload on the rear shock just to get the bike to turn as quickly as I wanted.

Nostalgia.....ain't what it used to be...🤔

My dog found that going down a carpeted staircase gave him an extra edge.

Bloomin funny to watch as well!

I know its gone of topic a bit but the only disks ive ever had skimmed was off a Porsche as the cost off new ones was stupid and that was 30 years back.

Can anyone tell me where I can get 340mm disks that are ATE as factory fitted to my VRS please ?

Back O/T... Have you looked on Autodoc?  If it were me, I'd be looking at something other than the OEM ones.  Hence the drilled Brembos and their HP pads on both our Karoq and Yeti.  Pagid get a good reputation as well.

I did look at Auto doc. There is not a VRS estate listed in their drop down menu & they don't reply to e-mail's or return message's left on their answer phone. And if put my vin in they say no such car.        Seems they do not want my dosh

Current part number for genuine appears to be 5Q0615301G (previously 1K0615301AD) if that helps you to cross-reference something.

It would appear to be just a case of digging a bit deeper into the Autodoc menu.  Would any of these work for you?   https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/brake-disc-10132/skoda/octavia/octavia-combi-5e5/126003-2-0-tsi-rs?criteria[200][0]=340&criteria[100][1]=VA
