Clockspring replacement help

Featured Replies

Hi

I got the dreaded airbag warning light and neither my steering controls or horn work. I've ordered clockspring part number 5Q0953569A and plan to replace it.

I have an OBDEleven but have no idea what i need to code to get all my steering controls and cruise control working again. I read somewhere that i just need to copy the steering long coding but I'm sure there is more to it then that.

Any help or guide to what i need to do on the OBDEleven would be appreciated.

Ive added my most recent scan if that helps

You change the long coding to the original value 6410

  • Author

Thanks. It's that simple eh?

I thought there was more to it then that and there was impacts to steering wheel angle sensors etc

Ok now just have to work out how to unclip the airbag given i have start/stop button and no key to unlock the steering

2 or 3 years ago I had lost blind spot and rear traffic detection. For an unknown reason, the long coding had all vanished...

I simply pasted the long coding, from a previous scan and all went back.

Thus I assume It should work for you too.

Let us know. ;)

This happens a lot, Passat 3G’s losing their ABS coding, T6’s suddenly deciding their dash has a TACHO and sends the display bonkers… stupid, it shouldn’t happen but don’t worry, they will have this sorted well before cars start driving themselves as can you image what would happen if a module recoded itself for traffic on the other side of the road? 😳

The worst possible scenario, worse even than Doomsday. - A drop in the manufacturers share price!

Ok. So i managed to replace the clockspring. That was pretty easy to do. Just needed the right spline tool to remove steering wheel.

But then i also tried to update the coding in control module 16 (steering column) via OBDEleven from 0010 to the old number 6410.

Unfortunately i get fault code 31(the function is not supported)

Does anybody know what to do here? I've tried security code 20103 which was accepted, but still f didn't let me change to the old code

  • Author

So the old clockspring has software id 195 1879 and the unit was manufactured in 2015

The repacement unit has software id 235 1265 and the unit was manufactured in 2020

Is it possible the units software is too new?

The Rosstech help topics has one on clockprings, the functions that are supported vary on the various  revision numbers, you should choose one with the suffix that supports the functions of your vehicle.

It is the reason why when doing a cruise control or steering wheel controls upgrade the clockspring often has to be chnaged as well to a revision number that will support that function.

Suffix number is probably a better term than revision number.

Yes. I also saw that ross tech wiki.

The thing i can't get my head around is that the failed part was 5q0953569a. According to the Ross tech wiki that doesn't support ccs/acc however the cruise control worked absolutely fine with this part number.

Also when i rang Skoda, they also quoted the above part number based on my VIN

Im stumped

See attached

That will be because it doesn’t support steering wheel mounted ccs buttons.
as the superb mounts them on the stalk they don’t need to go via the clock spring so no need for it to have that functionality

Ok makes sense.

Still no idea why i can't code the steering column back to 6410. It allowed me to code it to 0410 (rear wiper) but not the 6 (ccs).

So frustrating

That will most likely be down to the software changes, you might have to reach out to Rosstech if you are using VCDS and a genuine head, they might have a different coding to offer you.

Other choice is dealer/indepentant and to do an online coding change on the part so the factory can generate the correct coding (in theory)

So i bought another 5q0953569a, thinking that the replacement had dated software. No dice. I still have the exact problem. Error 31 - function not available. I'm using OBDeleven. I'm wondering if another control unit or similar needs long coding changes to support unit 16. If somebody has a recent scan can they please let me know if their superb has both the same part and software number.

as always, any help is appreciated

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I cannot seem to resolve this. I have bought three separate clocksprings (squib) thinking they are the problem. They are all Valeo branded and OEM 5Q0953569A . This is the part number as quoted for my VIN.

It's just the coding. I try to return the code to the original code of 6410 and get 31 function not available.

My question is there any other modules or adaptions I have to change to re-enable ACC?

Thanks

I’ve just stuck mine on eBay which already has the coding 6410 but before you buy one pre coded:

What is the current coding?

what was the previous squib part number?

Have you tried changing it one bit at a time?

My OBDEleven scan shows 0410.

The original code is Long coding: 6410

when i add the clockspring it returns the coding to 0010. I am able to update to 0410 which adds rear wiper but not anything to do with the ACC which i previously had (that is the 6 in the 6410)

And what was the previous squib part number, why are you changing it

No offence mate but have you read the post?

My clockspring failed so i replaced with exact same part number. Unfortunately the new part although identical, needs updated coding to work.

Hence the problem. It won't let me change to the code which i originally had 6410. So i don't have ACC and I'm getting warnings as a result. The steering wheel is not communicating properly with other modules including engine etc

It only allows 0410 and says 31 function not supported when i try to update via obdeleven to 6410.

If the part number matches the original and also the one quoted by skoda according to my VIN, then i can't work out what else it could be

Sorry i meant software number, does it match up.

Regarding the coding this is how odis displays it;

Byte00:
0110 0100 ($64)

Byte01:
0001 0100 ($14)
[LN]_Ignition key removal lock:	[VN]_not installed
[LN]_Buttons for multi-function display:	[VN]_not installed
[LN]_Rear Window Wiper:	[VN]_installed
[LN]_Buttons for driver assistance systems:	[VN]_not installed
[LN]_Switch_for_cruise_control_integrated_in_turn_signal_switch:	[VN]_not installed
[LN]_Switch_for_cruise_control:	[VN]_installed
[LN]_Adaptive_cruise_control:	[VN]_installed
[LN]_Signal horn activation:	[VN]_Always
[LN]_Horn_debouncing:	[VN]_not active
[LN]_speed_limiter_button:	[VN]_installed
[LN]_diagnosis limitation:	[VN]_not active
[LN]_Read_p_locked:	[VN]_active

Byte 0 which is the 64 doesnt actually have any changable values so dont know what its purpose is, but it looks like it may need adjusting as a complete byte - unsure if OBD11 has the ability to do this like ODIS does.  (OBD11 may go bit by bit instead of complete byte)

Byte 1 is then all the variables.

If you are still unable it may come down to using ODIS and running the SVM routine which will full reset and set the module up correctly.

Unfortunately i only have OBDELEVEN. I didn't think it would be this hard

It seems this may be a software issue.

In my original scan the middle had software 3Q0953521BD

This corresponds to the skoda stalk I have in my superb.

it seems the 5Q0953569A i have been sold contains different software 3Q0953521CS despite  being the same part number. I think this software corresponds to a passat stalk.

This part number is across multiple models in VAG group, golf, passat, octavia and superb.

does anybody know if it is possible to update the software to the correct model I have or do I need to buy a 5Q0953569A for the superb only ?  Software versions are not listed anywhere and am trying to avoid the dealer cost of $1000 for the unit

Hi! Did you resolve your problem?

I have the same problem, Skoda Octavia 3, clock spring 5Q0953569A broken (I've uninstalled it and the band is broken no way to fix), so I need to buy a replace. 450€ brand dealer, 150€ same part number, but I'm afraid that I have the same problem that you with the software. Did you resolve your problem? Must be the SW version in the label the same that the original part?

Thanks in advance!

Just pay for the original part. I bought three with the exact part number but were for other vw models it turns out. Managed to track down a skoda model online for much cheaper than the dealer and it works perfectly. Needed to code back the original code so make sure you take a scan before you remove it
