2013 Skoda octavia elegance 1.6tdi overheating issue

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm troubleshooting my dad's 2013 octavia elegance 1.6tdi cr.

It has sporadic overheating issues which we are hoping is a dodgy thermostat. The issue is I'm uncertain on what type of thermostat the car needs.

In essence we were driving down the road for 30 or so minutes when the temp gauge shot to red. We immediately pulled over. The fans were on, the oil was steaming hot. The header tank however was cold.

Turning the heating on keeps the gauge where it should be and also caused the header tank to become warm. Which makes me think the heatercore being in circuit has got the thermostat to open.

Have looked everywhere for the cars engine code to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What is the VIN? If the temp gauge goes over 90 it means it is really at least 117 degrees.

Is it a mk3 octavia on a 2013 plate or a very late mk2?

if the mk3, you will need to get the water pump checked as there is a sleeve on it that can stick. Budget for a new water pump, cambelt/pulleys/tensioner etc as it’s all driven by that.

Sadly not uncommon.

possibly just checking a cold car and looking in the coolant bottle to make sure the silica bag in the coolant header bottle hasn’t split and blocked things up too.

It's a 63 plate. Not too clued up on if its a mk2 or 3.

Still could be Mk2 or Mk3.

Look at the VIN plate in the windscreen, and post that here (omit the last 7 digits if you prefer).

It was built with the failure prone eclectically adjustable mechanical pump 04L 121 011 P but I would have thought by now it would have been replace with the new 04L 121 011 N

As a note it had a brand new engine fitted at 56k miles by Skoda (presumed a previous fleet vehicle). However, there are no stickers on the cambelt casing. Nor in the wheel well to identify the engine. No idea what year that would have been but it was prior to my dads ownership.

Mostly I'd just like to know exactly what thermostat I'd need? Using the reg on Autodoc returns two different types of thermostat. The long thinner one and one that I believe should come in its own housing?
