As the extra £390 car tax for 5 years is based on list price over £40,000 (including options), and not any discounted price you pay, would be very easy to add couple of options and breach the £40,000 list price.

Although anything that is in the accessories brochure can be done as a separately invoiced transaction (even if dealer fits it before delivery) to help keep it below the £40k extra tax.

I kooked at getting an A6 Avant that was two years old and had a great spec. I then found out I had to £520 annual road tax for the next four years, the list price plus options put it well in excess of £40k (new). The insurance was much higher than my Mk3 vRS.

After a week of contemplation it was a no brainer to go for a used Mk4 vRS 😀

I find some of those prices eyewatering. According to the April listing the equivalent model to mine, with all options fitted, is around A$11k (6k pounds) more than I've just paid for my MY23. I would have thought that in the much larger UK/European market you would be getting a pricing advantage, but it seems the opposite is the case.

It says a lot that 2 years ago was £21,265 - 35,620 same engines

or upto £37,515 for now discontinued iv hybrids

But now is £24,540 - 39,180 which is 15.4% increase for cheapest version
