Stuttering Superb

Recommended Posts

HI, my name is Jonathan from  N.Ireland.  I have just come across this fantastic site as I was googling my problem and this site appears to be the go to with questions problems and tricks Skoda related.

My car is a Superb mk3 2017 2.0 diesel Estate. I bought the car in 2020 with 59k on the clock from a dealership. I have never had any trouble with it up until about 6 weeks ago, as the car was approaching 85k I got my timing belt & water pump replaced (by a reputable garage)  About a week or so after I was starting to get intermitting stuttering when accelerating, it would only last for a few seconds then drive as normal. This has been happening on and off now ever since, sometimes I can go a week with no issue , other days it can happen several times in one journey. The mystery in all this was it wouldn`t bring on the engine management light, I have brought it back to my regular garage who changed the fuel filter and cleared the lines as precaution but couldn`t find any issues and nothing was recorded on the diagnostics, after checking with other mechanics no one seems to have experienced this and googling the problem lead me here. A couple of days ago whilst stuttering a number of warning lights came on and the car went into limp mode. the following lights came on. PREHEATING UNIT, ESC, TYRE PRESSURE, ERROR PARKPILOT, there were other warning messages but unfortunately I didn't get my phone out quick enough to record. My local garage has been closed over Easter not opening until 17th. I took it to another place who kindly plugged it into the diagnostic machine, the following were the error codes, p032200 Ign./Distributor Eng.Speed Inp.Circ. No signal, & C114602 Tire pressure monitoring display Signal error. I have booked into Skoda for a diagnostic test at the end of the month, I will bring the car to my local garage in-between when he reopens but I just wanted to  check in case this is something anyone out there has encountered. Thank you in advance.

It's probably not the battery voltage or poor battery connections, but that's the first thing I would check as it's such an easy check.

What is the battery voltage measured at the battery terminals after the car has been left standing for at least 8 hours?

If it's less than about 12.1V-12.3V that should ring alarm bells. If it's less than this, it could indicate that one of the cells in the battery is going bad and can no longer keep its voltage. On modern cars with complicated electronics, this can throw a spanner in the works.

I know of one car that had a new battery fitted by Halfords. The young lad who fitted the battery didn't tighten the battery terminals correctly, which caused all sorts of electronic problems.

Another problem could be bad diesel, or water in the diesel. Although that would affect all the diesel cars that filled up at the particular petrol/diesel garage. The way to solve that problem, is to run the fuel tank low perhaps into the red before filling up at a different garage. Although water in the diesel tends to lead to persistent judder rather than the intermittent problem that you are describing.

Thank you for your reply, I only have basic testers which are showing me 12+ volts on the battery, I have checked connections to the battery and although tight I have given an extra turn.

That's great thank you, I will bring it to my local garage on Monday with the codes and if no joy I will try your recommendation before going to Skoda.

Hi,

there was a common fault with the cable loom where it made a sharp turn before connecting to the crank speed sensor.

The cables were prone to chafing, worth a look.

Quick up date, brought to Skoda today for their diagnostic test, came back with intermittent fault on the crankshaft sensor was given a price and I gave the go ahead. Was rang several hours later to say when the mechanic was about to fit the new sensor he discovered a leak from a faulty crankshaft seal on the gearbox side which would require 5.8 hours labour and £700+ bill! Says the old sensor was probably OK and that the oil from the leak would have been the cause of my problem all along.

I am holding off for now as I have since spoken to 2 different mechanics who found this strange for the age and mileage of the car and were surprised the mechanic didn't just fit the new sensor. I think I'm going to get my local mechanic to replace the camshaft sensor and try and examine as best he can for leaks.

Just getting around to replying to this now, it turned out to be a faulty camshaft sensor, since ive had it replaced I have driven around 800 miles now without issue.

Sorry for digging this old thread up, but did you have any further issues @JK7?  My car is now having an intermittent stutter, but was noticably bad tonight.

Thanks

Hi, yes fortunately I've had 7k miles now without issue. It was a head scratcher at the time for several mechanics. Hope you get sorted.

Hi there, just checking to see how your car is performing after the camshaft sensor replacement... I've got a 2017 2.0TDI 110kw/150bhp which gave the same kind of behaviour for the last 2 to 3 years, since about 60k miles on the clock. I did have an after market Race Chip installed, but removed that - it was not a remap, just something that plugs into 3 sensors (camshaft sensor, boost pressure sensor, common rail sensor) and resends modified outputs to the ECU (my simple understanding). Anyway, that was removed straight away, and never reinsalled since. The car was always and only ever serviced by a Skoda Main Dealer in Co. Clare, and they couldn't find the issue. Eventually they suggested it might be camshaft sensor was loose, so they tightened it, but the problem was there. Since then, and after loads of investigations and forums, the problem is still there. I've replaced the camshaft sensor (advice from Skoda), replaced the boost pressure sensor (advice from a local mechanic), and replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor (advice from another local mechanic and online forums), however, the problem has still not gone away. Seems to trigger when you have a heavy foot, or when the car is driven hard, parked, and then the next time you drive it, it triggers this. Switching off, locking the car, leave it sit for 2 mins, always clears the issue. Took it again to a different Skoda garage, in South Dublin this time, and they've refused to take a look at it because of the Race Chip that was previously installed. Has the camshaft sensor replacement fully resolved your issue?

Hi there, sorry to hear about the issues you're having. Yes my issue had several mechanics scratching their heads, it was when it was in with skoda themselves their computer detected a faulty cam shaft sensor. Yes it has not given me any trouble since and I have driven around 10k now since.

Great, from what I've seen these can be a pain in the rear to resolve. Glad you got yours sorted! I might replace that again with an OEM part this time and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the quick response. Apart from that, it's been a brilliant car.

Yes I remember checking everywhere online in different forums as no one seemed to encounter the issue or expensive suggestions. Gladly it's sorted. Hopefully you get to the bottom of yours.

I'm having the same problem with a 2016 2.0 this Superb.  Feels like the engine has hiccups, or like it's not getting fuel.

It can do it 2 or 3 times in about 20 seconds,  then disappears, not returning for a few days.

Occasionally it also starts funny,  The engine would keep turning over and not starting,  with all warnings lights come on like a Xmas tree.

I  switch off, and on after 10 seconds or so, and it starts fine.

The main Skoda dealer cannot detect any errors on the diagnostics!!

Totally strange,  and annoying,  I went to other mechanics and mates with diagnostic cable an pc, but no one can find the problem.

Sure the main Skoda main dealers know about these errors!!!

Help needed in resolving,  thanks for your post on this issue.

Is it down to a camshaft sensor?

Hi, sorry to hear you're having similar issues as I was. Yea camshaft sensor sorted it for me thankfully after several mechanics unable to find the fault.

Hope you get sorted.

Hi, yes I also changed camshaft sensor, but that didn't resolve it. The problem seemed to disappear, but was back within a short while. I eventually got tired of it and took it to a BMW specialist outside Nenagh, and left the car with him for a week. He couldn't find any issues, the problem didn't appear when he had it (typical), so I asked him to just do a remap anyway as I suspect it's a sensor or ECU issue. Have the remap done now and no issues in the last 2000kms so far.

Thanks Justgenius for the update,

I'm near Nenagh, si I'd be interested in getting those details from you for that BMW specialist.

Can we private message on this group?

Regards np

If you just search for RA Auto, near Silvermines, you'll find him. He is difficult to get a hold of if you ring him, but if you text him, he will get back to you. His name is Richard, and he's good at what he does. Try raauto.ie.
