Whistling, but not the turbo....

Featured Replies

Took my dad out at the weekend in my vRS on a 'convert the non-believer' run. Thing is though, the passenger wing mirror was whistling like a good 'un above 60mph, and quite loud it was too. This didn't really help as the car is so quiet otherwise. Does anyone else's do this, or have I been cursed with a noisy wing mirror?

Are you sure it wasn't your dads starfish trying to clench its teeth?

No, I didn't try to scare the old boy too much. Damned annoying noise though. None of my other cars have ever had this problem. Small I know, but on a long drive it could get to be a bit like water torture.

Did you have your windows open or closed?

Even a small gap from the rears can make hell of a racket!

It's odd that it's only just started to happen:confused:

Nope, all windows were firmly closed and it was definitely coming from the mirror. I wondered if it was an Octavia thing, or if my car has decided that it wants to have a turbo and a wing mirror whistle?

The rattle from the glovebox is intermittent and seems to be temperature related. I must say, even though this is a new car, it is the worst for rattles 'n' stuff, even worse than my Citroen C2 was.

try covering different bits of the mirror with tape (At the gaps) and you can eliminate where it is, Maybe a wee touch of silicon, neatly layed down, would solve it?

Or a trip to the stealers of course ;)

I tried it with tape, and located it but because i am younger and dealer was older he said i can't hear it get lost.

never heard a strange whistle on my car

but then i have a chuffing loud exhaust and a chuffing loud stereo :D

Check out the tyres. Tyre noise most likely. feels like a "whooosh" sound coming from somewhere close to the wing mirrors. Starts at 80 kmph. Gets progressively bad as you cross the ton and really howls after 120km/hr.My friend has the same problem. Narrowed down to Dunlop Sport SP2000 tyre. Bad tyres.

I have bridgestone Turnazas on mine. Not a sound from anywhere, even at 210Km/hr.

Thanks for the advice. It might not be the tyres, as they are standard factory fit. I like the idea of the tape and a bit of silicone, it sems the most sensible option. I don't want to see a dealership 'till the first service in 10k miles if I can as there isn't one near me and it will be a real hassle.

Also, talking of the silicone trick, has anyone done this to the rear window to stop the boot flooding problem?

this used to happen with my celica gt 4 and was common on all of them. its something to do with the seals around the mirror, if they are not tight or have a small gap in them, then air will go through it and whistle at certain speeds. only solution is tape, or silicon or a new mirror with a new seal.

Right, I'll try to sort it at the weekend, thanks.
