Creaking noise from roof console

Featured Replies

Hi

Not a major issue, but a bit of an annoyance. I have a 2022 Octavia RS TSI bought in Dubai with a little over 15k Kms. It comes with a roof module that contains the map lights, sos module, and sunglass storage. That unit creaks during acceleration and on rougher roads. I figured that it's that unit after pressing against it then finding the noise subsiding.

Anyone else experienced that? Any solutions?

I plan to bring it up in the next service appointment but till that happens I'm wondering if that's a common issue or there's any known fix or solution.

Yep mine did this before I asked the dealer to turn the fake sound speaker off and it stopped this rattle when under acceleration.

That makes sense, perhaps the bass in the fake sound resonates with the ceiling unit. Although I'm not too thrilled with the fake sound, it would've been good to find a solution where the creaks are eliminated without having to forego another feature regardless of whether it is appealing or not.

I was thinking of perhaps trying wd40 or some tape that would stop having the plastic pieces rub together, don't know if that will help.

I dont think that WD40 helps if pressing against it just reduces these noises. My unit does not have a sunglass department due to the panorama roof.

Does it make any difference if you leave the sunglass cover open?

Is it anything like this video?

I'm used to assembling the roof console on the T-Roc because assembling it is one of my jobs at the factory, but i've never seen how these new consoles are assembled so i haven't tried to fix it since i'm afraid of breaking something.

This creaking is also present on the cover of the sensors and rear view mirror, they're not very noticeable while driving but on more rough roads there's a creak and crack every so often coming from there.

I had a similar issue on the interior door handles and electric windows control modules but i fixed it with Silicone WD-40 and felt tape (regular WD-40 always dries up and noises return), kinda want to do the same on the roof consoles eventually.

WTF sounds like walking the stairs in to some creepy attic.....

Guess that assembly is made of different plastic parts not holding tight enough together. Hard to fix without knowing how to disassembling that stuff.

Went on a mighty epic quest in Google worthy of King Arthur himself and was able to find pictures of the MK4 console's underside.

I might try to remove it eventually based on these pictures.

From what i'm seeing i'm almost 100% sure the noise comes from the white plastic rubbing against the black plastic. Silicone based or Dry PTFE lube WD-40 cans should do the trick.

This looks quite helpful. Thanks. I also have vibration coming from either mirror cover or from the light module. I plan to add some sound insulation (foam and/or bitumen).

L.E.:

Unbelievable!!! (at least for me) The ENTIRE "front door module" as they call it - is a single unit. The Manual says none of the components (4 to 13) are individually replaceable... 🤕

As someone who works at a car assembly line, that's actually fantastic, BUT as someone who also has a car with that part and there's always a chance of failure.... well.... not that fantastic 😅

Thanks for the manual pics, they're incredibly helpful.

That is exactly the sound I get. I'll check out the other responses related to the parts and assembly and see if there's something I can confidently do myself without voiding my warranty or just leave it to the dealer. Thank you.

I had the same noise, I have tried with some silicon spray but with no luck.

The second time I had put a piece of sponge between the back of the roof and the eyeglasses holder.

I pulled down starting from the mic, then there were 2  side hook that I just pushed in and then all che consolle can slides back.

There is just 1 cable connected inside.

At the end, only for a few ignitions there where an error message "Airbags problem"

nice info and pic thanks

Anyone had this issue resolved through the dealer? Mine has started creaking constantly under acceleration even with the fake noise turned off.

Honestly.... it's still doing it even after i took it out, i did solve it for a while with some felt on the holes where the console springs clasp and by adding a bit of felt as well to the clip which clips the headliner to the metal roof, i've notice quite a bit of creaking comes from there too.

After a while it came back, not as much but it still does it. I find it really annoying, i've had Fiats, Renault, Opel and none had these problems. This is by far the most expensive car i've owned and the first i bought brand new from the factory, and both the roof and door panels are a noisy mess.

So I am still searching and testing.. What I found is that the black panel where the console is mounted on cracks also in the area of the picture..

Right at this spot there is also a white clip behind it which goes into the metal.. its holding the cable harness..

When I push at this spot it crackles.. so for testing in sprayed Krytox (the VW spray, like silicone spray) right there.. on the white harness clip and on the clip of the mounting panel and it was gone..

So the next step is I will fix the white clip with butyl..so it cant move..

The console itself is half quiet now.. the area where the sunglass box is I used felt tape.. no crackling anymore.. the area where the light is still crackles.. I sprayed Krytox on it and waiting now.. testing it the next days..

Nice, yeah those clips are annoying as hell.

How do you remove the console btw? When i did i was as careful as i could and two metal springs still came out, one of them now lives by itself somewhere inside the headliner, i was lucky because it doesn't rattle around at all but i'm afraid of removing the console again lol

So I try to explain..

I start at the side of the sunglass box..

I go in with my hand and pull down, so the console "seperates". I marked it with number 1 on the picture..

So now there is a space and I can see the two black hooks.. number 2

I push them with a removal tool and the side will go down..

3rd step are the black hooks on the side.. push them with a removal tool and it will come of..

The metal clips are not really holding the console.. its the 4 black hooks you have to release.. thats the trick..

OOOOOh i think i get what you're saying, yeah that's how i removed it as well actually, i thought there was a way to push the metal pins in because mine were kinda stuck to the headliner, some were bent upwards when removed and two of them came off.

Thanks for the tips Lukas, you've been incredibly helpful!

If the console starts being annoying again i'll definitely do more work on it and on the headliner clips.

So.. here is my final result to make the roof console quiet..

i fixed the white harness clip with butyl to the metal and sprayed Krytox to the little clips of the mounting panel..

On the console itself I used some felt tape on different spots like the hooks of the sanglass box and sprayed Krytox to some critical areas..

To me its 99% silent now..

Some pictures..

and videos..

No problem! I am here to help, if I can 🙂 You mentioned that your doors are crackling also? Mine did this..

I also used Krytox (Siliconespray is also possible) and sprayed it into the gap above the chrome trim.. now it is silent..

For the crackling window switch module I used some litte felt pads.. 1mm thick.. 11mm size.. and its also quiet now. On the picture you see the spots I have put them..

Hello,

i also expreriece the same noices from this unit.

I was planning to remove the lighting unit and investigate where the noises are coming from. In my mind, it is the junction of the 2 plastics of the lighting unit (white with black plastic).

I read this thread and got some ideas.

The instructions for removing the unit from the roof of the car are very helpful.

Anyway, I will update.
