Corrosion on octavia estate tailgate

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2003 1.9tdi 130 L&k estate, in august last year I had a new tailgate fitted by Skoda due to rust appearing just under the rear window, this was due to the glass rubbing away the paintwork exposing the metal. All was wonderful until recently I noticed rust appearing on both sides of the boot handle. I have taken it back to the skoda approved body shop were I was told they would fix it but cannot guaranty it would not come back again as the handle was causing the paint to rub away and expose the paint again, and also because I have already had a new tailgate fitted Skoda may not allow any more work to be done. The body shop has suggested a rubber gasket is fitted between the handle and the door just like it is on the passenger door handles, but this is a fix Skoda would have to consider, the body shop would fix the problem and probably be doing it again and again. Is there anybody else out there with a simular problem?

Looked at a 51 plate L&K estate last week - the first Skoda I'd looked at buying - and was appalled at the rust under the tailgate glass. The dealer just shrugged his shoulders as I walked away in disgust. I thought it had had a rear shunt poorly repaired. Bought a hatch at the weekend which has faultless bodywork.

Sounds to me like you should be talking to Skoda here mate!

Skoda are aware of the tailgate rust issue.

the exterior of my tailgate is fine, but i hav a small bit of rust under the tailgate near the boot catch. i don't know if its a fault in the paint, or where a previous owner has shut the boot on something and damaged the paint.

Is this just an issue on later estates? I've got a 1999 SLX TDI est and my mates is one of the first, 98 I think, neither have any rust any where

I have the begginings of rust under the window and either side of the handle. How long is the anti-corrosion warranty?

EDIT: Mines a 2001 51 BTW.

Mine is a rust free 51 plate that is rust free.

The anti-corrosion warranty isnt worth the paper its' written on as it has to be perforated before you can claim. Its actually an "anti-perforation warranty"

I thought as much.

The warranty on the corrosion is 10 years

Paint 3

It is fully galvernised (spelling) that is why they give 10 years

Go to your dealer Eddy and let them have a look , you would be better to go to a dealer with a body shop too

Sarah

I've got a little bubbling above the handle on my estate tailgate as well. Think a trip to FR-Pullyms (sp) is in order.

I've got some patches of rust in the channel where the glass meets the bodywork on the rear window of my 02 plate hatchback. My dealer, ALS at Little Downham have never seen rust there before & photos have been taken & sent to Skoda.

As I've only had the car around 6 weeks somebody had better be prepared to stump up some dosh to put it right, because I'm certainly not going to!

Eddy, I think the nearest Skoda bodyshop is in Leeds.

On my 03 tdi estate l&k it started with a bubble of rust under the window, Skoda kindly replaced the whole tailgate because there was a fault with how they bonded the window in place, after a year after the fix rust appeared under the boot handle, because Skoda had already replaced the tailgate it was know no longer there problem but the paint shop that did the work. They repared it under there guarentee, but could not guarentee it would not come back because Skoda had ommited a rubber gasket between the handle and the boot, this ment the handle would move on the paintwork gradually wearing through the paint and then walla rust will appear again. Pants Pants Pants. Dont you just love Skoda.

firedaz, in your situation i would have a rubber gasket fabricated, because it will only cost a matter of pence and save you all the trouble in the future :)

my 2003 estate had rust on the tailgate where the lower part of the glass sits, dealer fixed it as part of the purchase, no sign of rust anywhere else, but the central locking still doesn't work, oh well

I had the rust on my 52 L&K but my dealer, Horton's in Lincoln changed it with out batting an eyelid and I didn't even buy it from them.

I will keep an eye open around the handle but the only problem I've had is sometimes the lock doesn't always release the boot:confused: from the keys

Have got the same problem on an 52 elegance estate 122k, the rust has appeared fairly quiclky over the winter. Have had 15 year old cars with less rust! Been to Skoda and they say they will do something, will have to wait and see..

The other problem with the bodywork/paint is that all the doorseals have worn the paint off around the car leaving exposed metal.

i have two spots under the glass by the badge that have caused the paint to lift off, although its not rusted yet, as there is no paint on the two patches now and you can see the galvinised metal work is it worth visiting my skoda dealer!

I had the afore mentioned patch of rust/bubbling paint at the base of my rear window (51plate estate) prior to purchasing the car. I had the boot treated and re sprayed as a part of the sale agreement. I will keep an eye out for the handle though-

Has anyone else had small patches of paint lifting by the wheel arches? I have recently treated these myself as there was slight bubbling.

On my 52 L&K i have noticed exactly the same problem, i am applying to Skoda thanks to you for the same work, went to IML in plymouth, not much interest as no body shop and over 4 years old, however they sent me to there approved body shop Ivybridge Custom Body, and the manager steve reckons its likely to get approval for the same reason. thanks for the heads up. Once again Briskoda to the rescue! will keep you informed, indypops

I have the paint lifting off just under the window on the tailgate of my 02 L&K estate so I took it to Withams in Hersham last week. They said they would ask Skoda if they could do anything but didn't seem confidant. I havn't heard anything yet, but will post the feedback as I get it.

firedaz, your great. heard from IML in plymouth that skoda will repair rust under tailgate window on 2002 52 L&K. i only enquired because of your thread. cost over

Skoda have agreed to repair the tailgate after seeing photos of the paint lifting. Once again I am pleased with Skoda support - even if I've only needed it twice!
