Matrix LED headlight modes and dash symbols

Featured Replies

New vRS with matrix LEX headlights, lighting mode set to Auto.

Normally there's no headlight symbol in the dash, but the headlights do seem to come on at night.

One pull on the lighting stalk - a white headlight icon appears with "A" in the middle.

Second pull on the lighting stalk - a blue headlight icon appears.

I assume the blue icon means manual main beam, but what's the difference between no icon and the white "A" one? The manual and infosys help are as clear as mud...

White means auto main beam.  Can annoy others from time to time. There is a lights on symbol that illuminates on the switch itself when the headlights activate.

So what does no symbol mean, auto switching between dipped & main, depending on speed, street lighting, oncoming traffic etc? Or just dipped? That's what it seems to default back to on each restart.

I asked the service receptionist at the dealers, even they didn't know...

The service receptionist at a main stealer is paid to take your money, not to know about cars.

No symbol - dipped beam only.  Dipped beam will activate as required if this setting is chosen (on the main switch) - that is, when it gets dark.

Depress the stalk once for auto-main beam and again for main beam on - you would need to deactivate manually if you have turned it on manually.

This one did, we had a conversation about what might be causing the CAN bus errors on my car.

Thanks for that, I'm sure on my Mk III once you had set it to auto it stayed like this between starts, now it appears you have to switch it to auto each time. Almost annoying as having to turn lane assist off on each start. But at least it doesn't try to steer you into the kerb / the wrong lane if you forget, unlike LA...

The electronics on the Mk IV are a bit of a shambles, it seems.

Aagh, turn on on each restart...

OBD11 can enable the memory for both of them.

My car has been in Auto 100% of the time since I got it. The lights come on in the evenings or in tunnels or carparks. I never have to do anything.

This is how it looks in my garage when the lights are on.

The lower green symbol goes out when I drive out into the street and the lights go off.

Auto lights on (dipped beam) remains on once activated.  Auto main beam doesn’t.

Light Assist/High Beam Memory

With this modification when starting the car the Light Assist/High Beam will keep the last setting and will no longer restart by default.

1 - Module 09 Central Electrics - Adaptation
3 - Fernlicht_assistent:
4 - Fernlichtassistent Reset: change value to not activate(default: active)

Prerequisites: SFD Unlock required!

Good luck!

Ok. I misunderstood. You say "main beam" to mean what I call "high beam". Maybe its a AUS vs UK thing.

Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, and Americans call it high beam.   Probably many others.

That's very kind, I'd love to take you up on that, thanks. And if it can default Suicide Lane Assist to "off" as well, that would be brilliant.

I'm gonna do a full VCDS scan on it first, to check if the garage have actually cleared the 27 faults it was showing. Faulty alarm siren that needed replacing, apparently,

Didn't you trust me when I said it can? 😅

No, it was a just a polite request to do it at the same time 😉

Is it possible to turn the fake engine noises in sports mode off? I think I found the adaptation in VCDS but can't remember if it was locked or not.

There's an app for that in OBD11.

I managed to turn off the fake sound with VCDS, I also found the adaptation for turning off Lane Assist, which it let me do - but it's turned it off completely, so I get a warning every time I start the car, and I can't turn it on via the dash ☹️ I seem to need a security code to set it back how it was, but I've no idea how to get hold of that.

Is this something OBD11 can correct?

Did it in VCDS, it's unlocked.

Didn't work, the version of OBD11 we tried with generated the SFD code OK but then wouldn't let it be pasted back into the OBD11 app, so it wasn't possible to change the value.

  • 4 weeks later...

@vrsalan is there an option in VCDS to make Lane assist OFF by default and to be ON only by driver instruction (the opposite of what it is now)? Its definitely the most useless and annoying system on the car.
