Right price? 2009 Skoda Octavia 2.0T FSI vRS

Apologies if this isn't allowed, is in the wrong place, etc, I'm new.

 

I currently drive an old workhorse - an 2008 Octavia VRS estate, PD engine. I really love the car but it never got a good paint job at the factory, and it's flaking off all over. 

 

I am thinking about getting this car as a replacement:

And have put a deposit down on it, off to see it Saturday morning.  

 

I don't know modified cars, but I would enjoy more oomph, I've checked I can afford the insurance with mods mentioned, and this car looks well looked after. 

 

Two questions - do the modifications look well thought out, and what do you think of the asking price?

I don’t know about what mods that car has.

 

To me car looks good from the photos and with my Octavia I like cruise control, rear sensor and auto wipers/lights are so handy. 
 

my only question would be is the engine belt driven or chain?

If it is belt, when were they   last changed as you might need to do then sooner than later. 

I am not sure how much it would cost to do but I expect all  belts and tensioners to be expensive so budget £500.

There are a lot of mods mentioned..  stage 2, exhaust, intake.. 

 

The mk2 vrs facelift tsi or tfsi depending on whose terminology you use is the ea888 gen 2. Chain driven timing chain. 

 

Early edition tensioners were a nightmare for failure. If not done, you want to factor in new chain, tensioner and guides and it will be more than £500 I promise.

 

Ea888 gen 2 could be prone to clogged scraper rings which led to excessive oil consumption and eventual failure. Very difficult to detect at early to mid stages until you've drive 1000 miles and refilled 1.5 litres of oil. 

 

As for value, don't know now. For context I had a 2011 fl vrs kombi,  with nearly 70k miles completely stock, everything was neat and tidy and worked and sold for about £4k 2 years ago!!

Thanks both. I'm currently reading horror story after horror story re these engines. I guess it's better to suck it up and pay in advance for the tensioners etc than pay for a totalled engine.

 

I can see there are upgraded parts available for the clogged rings - but again not cheap. Thanks for the pointers. Often seems weird doesn't it, that manufacturing companies of such huge scale and experience can get it so wrong. 

 

Hi welcome to the forum, if you do go ahead with purchase, strongly advise taking it on an extended road trip, while under warranty, to check for excessive oil use.

Insist on rejection for this reason being part of any warranty offered.

I'd be interested in hearing of their reaction. 

Does the service history give any information regarding cam chain and tensioner replacement?

Thanks. Good advice. Yet to see the service history, but I'm told there's a thick file. Ideally I see timing chain somewhere in there.

The warranty they offer is total joke, so it's either it's in the file or do it straight away yourself I reckon.

If they're not prepared to cover excessive oil use, you should still be protected under consumer law - nice-looking car but if the warranty they are offering is as bad as you say, I'd recommend walking (or running) away.
