Coming up to three year service

Featured Replies

As the heading says, the cars up for its first MOT and the three-year service in a few weeks. Was given a voucher for a free MOT when we bought the car and have been quoted £253 for the service. Have since received an email to say the brake fluid is due for a change. If that is indeed the case then obviously I’ll get it organised for when the cars booked in for the service unless it’s included ?
I suspect there’s a schedule somewhere on here showing what’s included and additional cost items but couldn’t immediately find it.

Thank you

Their quote is £2 less than Skoda's "list" price for the service, which consists of an oil and filter change and some checks, most of which they'll do anyway as part of the usual dealer vehicle health check.

They'll want more for the brake fluid change - probably something daft like £95.  I've had the argument several times that if it's scheduled then it should be part of the service cost - on a VW we had, with a 3yr service plan, they hand wrote "brake fluid changed" on the invoice when I complained about it not being included!

Was invited in for a free, yes free, pre-Mot check, wash and vac, supposedly by way of a 3rd birthday treat 😂 Had that Monday, all ok, although wouldn’t use them as a regular valeter! Bodywork cleaned of a few mud marks but windows smeared in places and as for the vac that officially only covers the basic footwells so of course when I slid my seat back there was a load of crap that I’d normally vac myself. Oh well, it was free 😏

Will speak to them about the brake fluid change, just wasn’t sure if it was included in the three year service.

That's cheeky!!!

As an aside. The main Skoda agent charges £79 for a brake fluid change and a quote a few years ago was 150+ for the air con to be re-gassed.

My local independent: £30 brake fluid change, £80 for the air con service. I get the main service items done at the Skoda agent but as the main service this time ( 5 years and 30,000 miles) is £475 I am wondering if I am paying too much for their significant overheads?

What are they doing for that?  If the car has followed the usual annual service regime then 5yrs should just be a minor service - oil change and a few checks.  Skoda's website shows it as £195.  https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/servicing-maintenance-fixed-price

I don't know wht the chart has crosses in both standard and extended scope but even the dearer one is "only" £255.

So there’s the service schedule, thanks.

Interested to see the 3 year costing £195 - dealer gave me a figure of £252.39 which seems to include the MOT of £54.85 for which I have a free voucher; thought that would have appeared on their system as only bought the car from them six months ago, clearly not.  Any way I see the brake fluid is separately mentioned but not priced so will sound out local Indy or garage around the corner for a price before calling the dealer for theirs.

Update - under their separate pricing schedule it looks as if brake fluid change is £85.20 (which I assume isn’t just the labour 😂)  May see if there’s any discount offered being they’ll already have the car in 🤞

Ours goes in for its year 3 service tomorrow. We looked at the various servicing options and in the end decided on the Skoda '2 year service plan plus' (£27pm x 24) which gives us Oil & Inspection plus Extended Scope for the first year and Oil & Inspection plus pollen filter and spark plugs at the second year (year 4). There is also an air filter included which we are having done tomorrow - Skoda service schedule says it doesn't need changing until year 6 - sorry but thats far too long a period for my liking. The brake fluid is all that would have to be paid for seperately, but we will get that done when our tester shows moisture is present. We get the MOT's done for £35 at a testing station that we have used for years and that gives us an independant view on the vehicle's mechanical condition.

The benefit of the 2 year service plus plan for us is we lock in service prices now (it seems that Skoda are increasing them each year) and we are spreading the cost into monthly payments. When looking at costs, check the dealership price of spark plugs - having those included in the 2 year paln is a positive as they are not cheap.

Alternatives are to get basic oil & inspections at the dealers and use independant / non-franchise garages to do whatever other work you want done at lower cost. The All In deal is also worth a look if extending your warranty and roadside assistance are key for you.

I don't think you can take All In until the car is more than 3yrs old, but on the face of it, it's a no-brainer vs the service package as it includes roadside and warranty (and the MOT).  We had it on our Tiguan and have it on the Ateca.

On some brands VW Group has messed around with what All In covers, but the Skoda page seems to suggest that basically it a minor and a major service, so it includes plugs and air filter.

If you're not going to have a Skoda warranty then to my mind you might as well use an indie or even a trusty local garage.  They should be a fair bit cheaper and you won't get pleading to change the brakes and tyres when they're half-worn then.

I am on the annual service schedule and until this year all services have been just an oil change/  inspection I expected the full service to be expensive but £475 still seems excessive.

Yes - that wasn't their only  misdemeanour and we bought our next VW elsewhere.

Off Topic - I noticed a pic of your car and it has wheel arch trims.  Ours (pre-facelift) car  doesn't, and it seems few Karoqs have them.  I'd just accepted it, but was bemused to see the 72 Reg courtesy Karoq SE Drive we got this week had them.    Did you do something to get them fitted to your car, or is there some weird spec combination that gets them added?

You did right by not giving them your business.

The wheel arch trims were  standard SE L spec at the time of purchase last year I think. They were not part of any spec combination as far as I know.

I too had a 'free' pre MOT check today - at ATS

Looking at all the options, I took out a 2yr service plan with Skoda when it was on offer last month £16 x 24 for 2 services.

The MOT cost £22  ( Groupon deal with ATS Euromaster )

Brake fluid cost £45 ( + 15% off if your over 60 ) with ATS.

Halfords / National offer a similar service -  Sign up to their Motoring plus scheme ( £49 a year ) and that includes a free MOT + £10 discount on any service + 5% of std price

I'm also going to have the tyres changed. 20" don't come cheap but National currently doing a deal 15% off Bridgestone. So going thru Topcashback, I can buy a set of Vector4 All seasons for just under £800.

People speak about VW specialists - well our Karoq went to a VW specialist for it's 3rd service but it wasn't any different and not much cheaper than main dealer. Their brake fluid change was also £75 and to be fair, lots of small local indi's around these parts also charge over £70 for a brake fluid change. Had it done by National on the Karoq last year £29 which included some special offer discount code at the time.

I've no issues whatsoever with Skoda servicing the car but maintenance - nope.

Thanks.   I guess they must have been added with the facelift.  Have them on our Ateca and had them on Tiguan so quite miss them!

I foolishly signed up for a three service agreement with Skoda at a monthly cost of £30 for 24 months when my Karoq passed it 5yr point.

This equates to £240 per service which is expensive for what they do but is the going rate for a main dealer.

In theory this is fine however I didn't read the detail regarding spark plugs etc.

Rather than pay an additional charge of £105 for the plug change, I ordered my own and changed them for about £50.

I've attached a copy of the service plan

Thanks everyone. Made a couple of enquiries of local garages and they came back at £75 so may as well have dealers sort it whilst they have the car. Saves taking it off road for a second trip elsewhere.

Excluding the air filter as a service item is shameless penny-pinching, IMO.

@ronniebarker£105 for spark plugs replaced at a dealership during a service is a thing of the past, add another £15 or more to that.

@EnterNameHaving the Air Filter as a 6 year /60,000 replacement is taking the pith, and even more is those that do not even check it at services.

They will last well beyond 60K miles without becoming restrictive unless you are driving in the Sahara.

Mine get replaced when they start  falling apart which usually happens before they become restrictive.

Its been that way on vehicles since around 1995 when the filter housings and elements became much more voluminous to keep within emissions limits on extended service regimes, it took many years before VAG were the first manufacturer to recognise that filter replacement was not actually needed at every service, mind you if changing it was just a couple of spring clips they would still insist on doing it every service and stick up the retail price of the filters!

Only need to change brake fluid if needed. All reputable garages can check it and replace if needed. Our Karoq is over 5 years old and brake fluid is still fine.

Are you saying you have the original brake fluid, that garages have checked it and said not to bother changing it because it's fine? 😲

I've heard of people not changing their brake fluid and not experiencing issues, but that's a first for me if the garage has said it's fine after 5yr.

They may not have had it checked and the brakes themselves may well be fine, but I'd be very worried about what 5yr old fluid is doing to the pipes.

Correct, checked and it's fine, cars only done 35K
