Dog guard fixtures - removal - help!

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have a need to remove the headlining of my Yeti (dreaded pano sunroof leak) but it is held in place by the dog guard mounts the previous owner had installed. I assume they can be removed and wondered if a threaded bar locked in tightly may unwind it. The only issue is how do you lock another bar in tight without winding the current fitting tighter (unless it’s opposite thread but I can’t see it well enough).

Thankful for any suitable advice to remove it.

Hello Weti, welcome to the forum. Try threading-in a longish hex bolt with a locking-nut threaded on it - once the bolt is threaded in, run the nut down onto the insert fitting, then use the bolt to unscrew the fastener. NB, the fastener itself might be left-hand threaded, in which case - lefty-tighty, righty-loosey.

Hi @Warrior193 okay this makes sense. Thanks.
After posting the opener, and the LH thread occurred to me, I went back out to check. Looks like NS is LH thread and OS might be regular 🙄

Now I need to determine the thread diameter and source what you’re referring to. Such a pain to complete an otherwise ordinary job. I’ll check screw fix or somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s a big help.

In that case, it is possible that the fitting socket (If the fittings are threaded into the bodywork) may be the reverse to the external screw/bolt attachments for the dog guard - so, LH thread on near side, may be RH thread - I hope that's not getting too confusing. This might have been done to prevent them from unscrewing when the dog guard is attached / removed.

Another thought occurs - the possibility that the fittings are clench nuts - but that would make them non-removeable unless they are destroyed.

I think I follow. It’s difficult to tell by the photo I took but think the outer part ant least does unscrew. The lower fixing points are below the quarterlight windows and one of them is completely removed. This must have happened as the cage was removed prior to sale. I’ll check it out once there’s daylight.
I’ve found a rod which is cut left hand on one end and right hand on the other. That will be a useful tool to complete what you first described. I just need to figure the diameter now.

@Warrior193 Bingo! Thanks for the tip. Thankfully, both sides are regular clockwise threaded M8s.

Too late now for me to say but there was less than zero chance that any of the fixings would have been a left hand thread.
