Octavia iV Granny charging - How to get full charge

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

bit of a weird one here - i've had my iV about a week since delivery

previously had a golf gte - charged with granny 3 pin charger for 5 years - plug in, press button and it charges to 100%.

I cannot work out how to get a full charge on the Skoda - mine was plugged in at work from before 9 and left at 5 and was charged to just 50%.

I've checked settings - increased minimum charge amount to the max 50% but theres nothing immediately obvious as to what i'm doing wrong.

Can anyone advise - would be very grateful!

cheers

Ps Have downloaded the MySkoda app but haven't got round to setting up Primary user profile with both keys

Not of any immediate granted.. Had my iV three weeks and only charge at work, the single wall charger typically has someything fully EV plug in so I also use the 3-pin charger plugged into domestic wall socket.  Other than setting a user profile for myself for radio /screen layout etc, I have not messed about with the charging settings they are as come from the dealer, no idea how long its takes but some when from 08:30 to early afternoon its fully charge at 98% odd.

Sounds like you have charging schedule set. % of minimum charge is how much car will charge regardless schedule, but it will stop at this state of charge and will wait for scheduled departure time or off-peak time to continue charging till full.

What is "granny charging"?

Slightly non PC nickname for slow 3 pin plug wall socket charger

Ah. I need to get an outside socket wired up to do that. I used an extension cable one evening earlier in the week for 40 minutes and it didn't seem to charge it at all!

Same here. It didn’t like an extension but was ok through the window. Have a proper wall charger now even though ours can only pull 3.6kW. Shame it wasn’t something that could be upgraded. A full charge in half an hour or less would be brill.

You can use the app to tell the car to “start charging” so it ignores any plans / off peak timings. If you’ve not set these up yet, then I would think the issue lies elsewhere.

Once you get the app set up properly I’m sure you’ll be ok

Almost never worked for me. With only a few exceptions, app was always saying there is no power connected to the car and it won't launch charging. I figured it will start charging only if I push the button before care goes to sleep though.

Octavia won't take more than 3.6 anyway.

Yep! It’s the same across all VW group phevs. The new 1.5s coming out next year in the new passat, superb and kodiaq have faster charging

mine takes a good 5-6 hrs to charge on a 13 amp plug.

Ok so presumably it takes the same time from all chargers?

3.6kW is the max with a type 2 charger cable. So If you have a home wall box charger or use the charging network, this is what you’ll be able to charge at. Should take about 3 or 4 hours to do a charge

If you can only charge from a household plug (13amp/3pin socket), then the supplied charger for that is rated at 2.3/2.4kW which means it takes 5-6 hours to charge this way

Mine needs about 4h to charge from empty to 100% with charging set to "Maximum", and a lot longer when set to "Reduced" charge current.
Even with the "Maximum" setting I've never seen the car taking more than 3 kW per hour (average over the charging time) from the charging station, while on the "Reduced" mode it will charge at an average of about 1 kW.
p.s. same battery and hybrid system as the Octavia...

I’ve seen a similar thing when charging using the 3-pin. It’s not pulling the full amount the whole time. Seems to average around 1.5kWh per hour according to Octopus

I've never used a charging station before, there's a VendElectric one near my work and I've registered but it says you need an RFID card/fob and I dont know what that is. Can I use my Shell Fuel Card?

@mccririckYou are looking for Type 2 AC chargers.   7 kw or 11 kw and you are only going to get 3.6 kW charging.

You can not sit at a Shell Recharge Charger for a couple (or 3) of hours charging a PHEV.

You want the Longer stay chargers that are all around Edinburgh.    They call them FAST Chargers, they are not FAST.

Loads were out of Service @ Ingilston Early today and all 6 Rapids were Dark, No power.  There were DC Rapid Chargers.

Wallyford Park & Ride as an example of 7 kW chargers.   On ZapMap what you are looking for show as BROWN,  or might be beside the Purple markers.

My office as VendElectric charge points. Will the Shell Fuel Card I have from work that I buy petrol with work with those charge points?

Also what card / fob do you use? And have you tried the charge point at Mortonhall garden Centre? A charger app tells me that one is free.

No idea ask VendElectric or Someone that uses them.

Look at the page and the app.

PS

I am going to join,

i was stuck this morning for a charge at 7 am at Airport and went to PodPoint Broxburn to get charged.

I just registered on the App.  Not checked prices yet.  Likely i will never use them as  i pay for my own energy.  Handy of desperate though.

The Shell app has this one at Broxburn for 25p/kWh

@mccririckI passed it going to and from Lidl this morning.   No use to you though, you can not sit an hour to get 3.6 kWh or less.

You will use more than 10 kWh getting there & back.

I'm going to try the one at Aldi at Leith tomorrow. It's the same price and I'm driving over that way tomorrow anyway.

@mccririckIt is 65 pence a kWh on a fast charger. and a Rapid is 85 pence.       Tesco is just 44 pence for the 7 kW, still too expensive IMO.

Sheriff Brae, CPS is 50 pence a kWh on 7 kW chargers.  All just crazy prices.

What is wrong with plugging into the 3 pin at home if you can at 27 pence and getting about 2 kW an hour in?
